Campaigners for Liverpool’s ‘One-Stop Shops’ (OSS) to be reopened – the vital community resources that allow people with poor resources or mobility to sort out all their council-related business in one local place – have accused the council and their local MP of contempt and cowardice over their lack of response, or even willingness to talk, to the campaign.
Campaigners gathered at two remaining OSS locations today to mark a full year of protest – and to put pressure on the council and local MPs to reverse their decision to shut down the centres as part of spending cuts. But they went further, with protesters gathered at the Wavertree OSS accusing the city council and their local MP of treating them with contempt, disrespect and cowardice – and the party of ‘enabling’ the commissioners imposed on the city by the Tories to oversee cuts in the name of supposed ‘value’.
Campaigner Lynda Sergeant spoke to Skwawkbox at the demo and summed up on behalf of her fellow demonstrators:
Shamefully, when the Tories announced the imposition of commissioners on the proud left-wing city – which has a Labour-run council and a full set of Labour MPs last year, Keir Starmer welcomed the Conservative move, presumably a sign of his eagerness to persuade the right-wing press they can safely back him.
Starmer then went on to write for the Murdoch S*n, the ultimate insult to Liverpool after the rag’s war on Hillsborough victims, survivors and their families – a move protesters told Skwawkbox is ‘unforgivable’. Ms Sergeant thinks ‘there’s something missing there’, accusing Starmer of being ‘a boss’s man’ whose claims of working-class roots are a mirage.
Wavertree MP Paula Barker was contacted for comment but did not respond.

How is all of this anti-working class treachery taking place in Merseyside? On my visits esp the Wirral, I met some of the savviest, most sophisticated and knowledgeable left-wingers in the country. You have to give Max Headroom and the Tapeworms credit. They have been clever, persistent and determined. Do you still believe in the Labour Party? Attacking advice centres means that the resumption of Legal Aid is off the table.
The problem is that we are where we are because of the problems that were exposed by the government enquiry into LCC. The subsequent internal Labour Party enquiry (whose findings were unanimously endorsed by the NEC and supported by the LLG) also found a catalogue of problems. Hence Liverpool Labour has been put into ‘special measures’ by the NEC.
The fact is that the Tory appointed Commissioners are now running the show and the only ones to blame here are those who are responsible for the current situation arising. They betrayed the people of Liverpool, their colleagues and the Labour Party.
Labour Liverpool report finds local bullying, misogyny, toxic culture
The review conducted by Labour into its own functioning in Liverpool after government intervention in the city council has found evidence of “bullying”, “misogyny” and a “toxic culture” locally, LabourList can exclusively reveal.
The hard-hitting report, seen by LabourList in full ahead of being presented to Labour’s ruling national executive committee on Tuesday, reveals that local members have found “misogyny and lack of tolerance endemic”.
Based on the 77 written submissions received by the panel and its 53 interviews talking to 60 individuals, the investigation concludes: “Nothing less than a full reset of the Labour Party in Liverpool is needed.”
It recommends that Labour nationally takes over candidate selection processes in Liverpool until June 2026, and that it immediately fast-tracks outstanding complaints in the Liverpool City region, completing them within six months.
The panel led by former government minister David Hanson says it received evidence identifying a “toxic culture” within the Labour group on the council and “dysfunctional governance running throughout the organisation”
Noting reports of “poor performance”, “bullying, factionalism, misogyny and dysfunction”, “lack of organisation” and “unhealthy petty rivalries”, the document concludes that the panel recommendations “need acting on now”.

I live here, I’m not on holiday. We’ve had a home here for over a ¼ of a century. I am lucky enough to have the luxury of choice. I can swim in the pool or the sea, or walk on the beach, or explore the rainforest anytime I want to.
We are going to spend the afternoon on our beach with family. We’ll do a bit of diving and snorkelling catch some lobsters and fish to barbecue. WTF makes you think that how I spend my days has anything to do with you. Has knowing how I am enjoying myself cheered you up. I am enjoying my life, why would I want to drink myself into an early grave.
