Truss copies Johnson’s bullying tactic, but at least one MP says he will rebel regardless
In 2019, when Tory MPs voted to allow the House of Commons to do its job while Boris Johnson tried to obstruct it, the bullying Tory leader withdrew the whip from twenty-one of them.
In 2022, new Tory PM Liz Truss is copying Johnson’s bullying tactics to try to force MPs to support her and her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s mad tax-cuts – but at least one MP has publicly indicated he will rebel regardless.
Julian Smith MP has tweeted a quote of the threat, along with a statement that voting for the tax cut would be incompatible with his duty to constituents and the country:
Smith’s stand on principle does not, of course, absolve him of all the Tory measures he has voted through as a Conservative MP – or for pressuring MPs to break ‘pairing’ agreements they had made with pregnant MPs – but it is welcome nonetheless and is a display of resistance that puts the abstention-addicted so-called ‘opposition’ leader to shame.
Update 3 October 2022: after more than a dozen Tory MPs said they would rebel and PM Liz Truss tried to throw Kwarteng under a bus by saying the tax cut was all his idea, Kwarteng performed a humiliating u-turn and cancelled it.
