Tory Whip Julian Smith is under huge and growing pressure to resign – or be sacked – for pressuring Tory MPs to break their ‘pairing’ promise to absent MPs by voting in this week’s tight vote on Theresa May’s customs plan. Party Chair Brandon Lewis – the front-man for the Tories’ ‘respect pledge’ and the only MP without the morals to refuse the demand – is also facing calls to go.
But Smith’s allies have come up with what they think is an adequate reason to excuse his unprincipled actions. Labour MP Lyn Brown explained on social media:
So it’s ok, according to Smith’s mates, to break a ‘sacrosanct’ promise – just not to MPs on maternity leave.
Right.
Comment:
What an insight into Tory minds.
The Tories have shown absolute readiness to break every protocol in their attempts to cling to power – but breaking such a promise in an essential system that absolutely depends on trust among MPs is a new low.
All to protect a PM who is clearly so far out of her depth she can’t even see the bottom – and whose position becomes even more untenable with every second that passes without Smith’s removal.

The Tories are not content with having the bulk of the establishment on their side, they are not content with having the majority of the press on their side, they are not content with having the BBC and Murdock on their side, they are not content with having self serving TV commentators and interviewers on their side, they still need to lie and cheat to keep themselves in office.
Integrity and honesty are coming home, delivered by Jeremy Corbyn.
And ALL that will not save them when the MANY rise and say to the FEW …….. ENOUGH !
‘but breaking such a promise in an essential system that absolutely depends on trust among MPs is a new low.’
Won’t stop the likes of greasy & philips fraternizing with the rats though…
trust tory do the maths, even a clown that has six languages under there belt is not trustworthy, lets send mp out into real world in there summer break to work for minimum wage and see how long they last, oh and forget expenses as well
The Tories are quickly running out of ‘competent’ & ‘trustworthy’ talking heads to wheel out in front of the cameras.
At this rate they’ll have no one left who is capable of lying convincingly.
