MP will ‘update supporters’ this afternoon
Rumours are building that Jess Phillips is about to drop out of the race to become Labour’s next leader, following a disastrous start to her campaign and a hustings performance in Liverpool that Phillips herself admitted was ‘awful’, after she did not appear at the GMB union’s leadership hustings today.
According to the BBC, Ms Phillips is expected to update her supporters this afternoon:
Jess Phillips’ parliamentary office was not answering calls this afternoon. Her constituency office responded ‘No comment on that’ when asked if the rumours had substance.

Looking like she was going to burst into tears several times during the hustings didn’t do much for her credibility as a leader. Despite all her faux bravado Johnson would have demolished her at the dispatch box.

So she does have some capacity to recognise the bleedin’ obvious.

Typical Jess Phillips – couldn’t make an announcement of her intention to withdraw from the contest the way Clive Lewis and Barry Gardiner did . No she has make a song and dance about it despite her abysmal performance as she wants to hog the limelight for as long as possible,She’ll probably urge her supporters -11% of the members apparently – to vote for Lisa Nandy – they are two peas in the one pod after all.
Step back a bit from the dislike of Phillips’s posturing loudness and her views.
There’s an interesting issue about the qualities needed in leadership that she illustrates by not having them – and the mixture of qualities are quite hard to find, and not always predictable, and often not replicable (think Attlee).
I’ve been pondering this because of the absence of convincing candidates in this contest – which is possibly as much of a problem as the recent defeat.
