Lab First & Open Labour candidates fail to win home CLP nomination – eliminated from ballot

labour ncc

Interesting developments in the contest for six additional places on Labour’s National Constitutional Committee (NCC), the party’s senior disciplinary body.

At least two candidates from slates competing against the unified slate supported by CLPD, Momentum and other left groups have failed to win nomination by their home CLP (constituency Labour party) – and are therefore eliminated from the ballot, which opens 12 November.

Kirat Raj Singh, supported by Labour First and Progress, was ruled out when the executive committee of Perry Barr CLP attempted to nominate him directly instead of calling a meeting for members to have their say.

Steve Hart of Open Labour’s slate lost out when Hornsey and Wood Green nominated all six left-slate candidates on Wednesday and at the same time voted to affiliate to the left-wing Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL).

These blows to the respective slates are less heavy than they might have been, since the left slate is expected to sweep the board anyway, but still represent a serious blow to the credibility of the right and soft left of the party.

  1. Will the executive committee of Perry Bar CLP be officially reprimanded for behaving in such an autocratic fashion?

  2. Why the right simply do not face reality and act democratically by actually trying to address the concerns of the majority is a mystery. It’s almost as if they are happy to be far from power and influence and merely be a “protest group” who are largely ignored.

At best all the power that they have left themselves is to help those who oppose the left, a position without morality, rational basis or dignity…
