Keir Starmer’s ‘public energy company’ – a key part of his dreary conference speech that has had his cronies touting his supposed ‘radical’ policy stance as some kind of sign he will actually change anything meaningful – has been exposed as a big con as the details emerge.
Shadow Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has told Utility Week that the company will not supply energy to anyone.
Instead, Reynolds said that the purpose of ‘Great British Energy’ will be the:
management of the investments, which we believe are essential to unlock these markets and opportunities.
Nothing to do with public energy provision to ensure that UK families do not continue to be ripped off and impoverished by greedy private energy companies making obscene profits, then – just more marketisation of an already broken sector that can only be repaired by full renationalisation.

Even a paid for subscription is affordable for most people whereas an annual upfront subscription for the above site of £1,195 puts it well outside the reach of most people. I very much doubt that anyone who contributes to this site, including SW, has a subscription to utilityweek.
Any attempt to compare the paywalls of these two sites is palpably childish nonsense.

Toffee – It really shouldn’t come as a surprise to you, it is something that I have said several times before on these pages.
This is dispiriting if not unsurprising. The events with the Nordstream pipelines should highlight the fact that whatever is upstream, control of the means of distribution is critical and a potential choke point. If a government can take ownership of the distribution then it can increase the level at which it gives preferential usage charges to domestic and ideally sustainable energy sources and restrict or place additional costs on rogue or higher-charging suppliers until such time that they reduce their unit costs and/or adopt systems of governance that are acceptable (which is a different discussion). Further, a government-owned distribution system would be incentivised to increase and make possible contributions from households at favourable rates ie those who have a surplus from solar and other sources. This is of course contingent on supply outstripping demand but my first thoughts are that this would be a way to intervene in the market short of massive investment or purchasing of infrastructure that puts the government in a good position to accelerate away from carbon and centralised energy producers who otherwise can hold us to ransom.
Gotta slap Serbia and Hungary. Turkstream will possibly be next to blow.
