ONS expert appears to back Trickett’s take as MP exposes politics of Tories’ decision to put London in Tier 2 when northern Tier 3 areas had lower rates

An Office for National Statistics (ONS) data expert has appeared to back Labour’s Jon Trickett after the working-class MP said that the coronavirus infection rates exposed the Tories’ decision to keep London in Tier 2 after the England-wide lockdown as political and economic, rather than driven by health needs.

Trickett tweeted his take on the infection trends

The data bear out Trickett’s claim, as the latest table of the areas with the highest incidence of the virus shows:

And Ahmad Barclay of the ONS tweeted his own data supporting Trickett’s observation, with an interactive map showing rising rates in London and other Tier 2 areas:

London, in Tier 2, has seen scenes of packed shopping streets and the Tories’ continued determination to keep schools open until the last minute has seen them continuing to drive infections across England – while the Welsh government has decided to close schools from next Monday in response to increasing infection rates – as the Tories finally admit:

Trickett is right. As ever with the Tories, following the science is a sham, It’s too always little, too late and too political.

  1. Stating the bloody obvious, they cant even give a proper weather report without a flip of the wrist and a descending hand downwards to the SOUTH EAST. “Now today its looking rather bleak in the North” …blah blah blah..!

    1. However Joseph you could also interpret these figures as a government who are willing to sacrifice the lives of working people in London if,as we are told, lockdown is designed to save lives. What did baffle me is listening to a radio feature yesterday from Sedgefield where people who had “lent their votes “ to Johnson said they didn’t regret it. There was a similar item from Darlington on Channel 4. Cognitive dissonance perhaps.

  2. Children have the same viral load as adults. This has been known since day one many many months ago. Thank God I do not have family to lose, thank God I am no longer an ITU nurse, thank God I am off into the Highlands next week and will be there for at least two months. Best of luck everyone.
