Councillor Greenwich council ‘sought to protect’ from SKWAWKBOX convicted of fraud

Tonia Ashikodi convicted on two counts of failing to declare homes owned when applying for council housing

As the SKWAWKBOX reported a week ago, a London court heard testimony from the chief executive of Greenwich council that council officers and the council leader had ‘sought to protect’ councillor Tonia Ashikodi from the SKWAWKBOX’s 2018 enquiries about her housing affairs and the council’s investigation.

Just two months after the council denied there was an investigation into the councillor, she was charged with fraud for failing to declare two houses and a flat she owned when she applied for council housing in 2008 and and accepted a council home in 2012.

And now, Ms Ashikodi has been convicted on two counts of fraud relating to those housing applications – though she was acquitted of conspiring to pervert the course of justice while she was under investigation. She had claimed she was ‘holding the properties in trust’ for her father, but the court heard that she had been named as the landlord of one of the properties on the same day she accepted the council house.

The council has issued a statement claiming that the council ‘welcomed’ the verdict. However, council leader Danny Thorpe – who the council denied to the SKWAWKBOX was involved or even aware of the Ashikodi situation in 2018 but was revealed during the trial to have held at least one meeting with her about it – was reported to have cried when he told other councillors about the charges against her.

The court also heard of Tonia Ashikodi’s distress when she heard about the SKWAWKBOX’s enquiry.

Thorpe had refused to comment when contacted by the SKWAWKBOX, leading to the denial of his involvement by the council’s press team. In June 2018, local sources alleged that the council had kept the scandal quiet because Ashikodi was a supporter of the council leader and he had a majority of just one. Six weeks later, Ashikodi was charged.

Cllr Ashikodi could face imprisonment when she returns to the court for sentencing on 4 March.

  1. ”Cllr Ashikodi could face imprisonment when she returns to the court for sentencing on 4 March.”

And so she bleedin’ well should, for the maximum term possible without early release; because despite being cleared of perverting the course of justice, the aggravating factor is:

”She had claimed she was ‘holding the properties in trust’ for her father, but the court heard that she had been named as the landlord of one of the properties on the same day she accepted the council house.”

Also, If it’s discovered she wasn’t/ isn’t a british national should she not be deported after fraudulently depriving a (british or otherwise) family of a home, in order to satisfy her own avarice?

  2. Toffee you have given me a laugh on many a dull day and that is like gold dust to me.,but I could never agree to a blanket deportation just because a person is not a native of the British isles. For many its a death sentence. Here in Cambodia we now have regular flights into Phnom Penh of criminals who have no knowledge of the khmer language and only speak American English. They have left behind relatives mothers and fathers, wives and children. Many of these people were little more than babys whos parents fled the genocide of the khmer Rouge.Deportation can mean death or poverty .The tory party are copying Trump and I realise that your position would be that one less foreigner will improve your circumstances and it will not..All society is under threat and all services including social security, pensions NHS and our rights as human beings amongst just a few examples…We are under the boot of tyrants and the neo liberal establishment and we are better than them and one day soon they will pay for their treachery against the people of Britain.

    • Where does it stop, Joseph?

      What next?

‘Please don’t send loveable little cockney me to a jail in Birmingham because despite being born and living there until I was three, I don’t know any brummies…And if you DO, then I’ll just snap my fingers and get John I.S. Quidsin QC to wring every penny he can from the legal aid system to demand the system fund a spurious appeal and thereby deprive some poor law-abiding sod that actually needs the assistance, punishing them for my shithousery?”

Because that’s the way it’s gone. I appreciate some of the cases were indeed very harsh. But the fact is they broke the law. People who haven’t, and find themselves on the bones of their arses (And there’s MILLIONS of people here that are one paycheque away from destitution) get NO help whatsoever.

It’s THEM should get our support as a priority – each and every time.

Those deported are NOT the victims.

  3. Completely agree with The Toffee and so will many others……….

    • Clearly many others will – the Tories did just win an election after all.

      • Yep, pretty much as I suspected.

        …It’s ‘tory’ to punish criminals.

  4. So, mcniven…If it was found that ashikodi wasn’t a UK national, should she be deported, and if not, why not?

Bear in mind you’ll be answering to the hundreds of thousands of homeless people on waiting lists up & down the country, as well as the rest of us on here.

I mean, there’d be more council houses to go around if ashikodi was gone, wouldn’t there?

    • If you start from the premise that everyone on the planet is equally entitled to a decent life free from poverty – like wot socialists do – you’re not tempted to blame other poor people for increasing your poverty by existing in ‘your’ country and using up ‘your’ services.

It’s the rich who are keeping us poor, not other poor people.
It’s the rich who are keeping us poor, not other poor people.
It’s the rich who are keeping us poor, not other poor people.
It’s the rich who are keeping us poor, not other poor people.
It’s the rich who are keeping us poor, not other poor people.

995 more by assembly tomorrow please.

      • Yeah, and back in the real world you’d best allow theiving fraudulent avaricious rats like ashikodi to use toerag tricks to shaft the poorest and refuse to condemn them because you’re terrified you’ll lose your ‘right on’ appearance.

You’re an even bigger wanker than that danny ‘the tripehound’ thorpe.

But like the other gobshites on here , you’ve no shame.

      • Ashikodi has two houses and one fat…sorry, flat.

But – according to mcniven – it’s not thieving, fraudulent. avaricious rodents like her keeping me poor., it’s ‘the rich’ apparently…

      • I didn’t excuse, accuse or defend her or anyone who may have tried to conceal her alleged crimes – that’s for the courts.
Blind justice is important – hard to guarantee when there’s a howling mob grabbing at the scales.
You’ve already decided her guilt and picked a day for the lynching.

      • ”You’ve already decided her guilt and picked a day for the lynching.”

Stop your wriggling. No more excuses, she was given a fair trial where twelve good men and true found ashikodi guilty.

But I suppose the jury were all tories, eh?

  5. My point is deported or not ,the extra money 💰 saved by getting rid will not be used to help the vunerable ,but will be squandered on Tax cuts for the wealthy in a ideologically driven regime. Its almost a religious belief of the torys that “The poor are feckless and bad people” and the rich are good upstanding people who need to be rewarded for their privalge. That is the heart and soul of the Tory party..Titles,lands,apparthied education system,Royalty and Lords all part of a rotten system that survives and prospers inside the Labour party and the country that aceppts it.Don’t blame foreigners blame the establishment that should have been consigned to the dustbin of history a century ago.

  6. ”Don’t blame foreigners blame the establishment”

Not even when they commit violent crime, drug dealing, etc? Not everything’s the fault of the entitled, Joseph.
