LRC backs Hobson, Ahmed for NEC as JVL-supported Bird leads CLP nominations

L-R Deborah Hobson, Jo Bird and Hassan Ahmed

The Labour Representation Committee (LRC), which backed Rebecca Long-Bailey and Richard Burgon in the leader/deputy leader contests, has announced its support for Deborah Hobson and Hassan Ahmed in the vital by-election for two new constituency Labour party (CLP) representatives on Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

The pair, standing for a CLP slot and the NEC’s BAME position respectively, are also supported by Grassroots Black Left and Momentum Black Caucus.

The by-elections are running to the same schedule as the leadership process.

Birkenhead councillor Jo Bird, who is backed by Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL), is currently leading the nominations phase among CLPs with at least twenty-nine local parties voting to support her for one of the two CLP slots. Bird, who is Jewish, defended local Labour members when they were attacked by departing MP Frank Field as he resigned from the Labour Party.

Candidate statements for the three are below:

Nominations close on the evening of 14 February. Candidates must be nominated by at least five CLPs to qualify for the ballot of Labour members.

Update 4 Feb 2020: LRC has now announced that it is backing Jo Bird for the second member-elected NEC position.

  1. Little bit of research needed there. The LRC is supporting hobson and bird.

  2. Some many candidates when elected immediately join the club and sit there like dummys waiting to see what the “grown ups” think and thats why the Labour party NEC and governance are in such a mess..We are looking for socialist fire brands not followers but leaders..!

    1. Yes and no, Joseph.

It’d be embarrassing to mouth off to somebody and then have to ask them the way out.

  4. The Mirror since the election has completely turned centrist! I’ve had to stop buying it after 30 years! Pushing Starmer and Nandy! Who the hell can we trust?

  5. After seeing the comments above, don’t people realise we are talking about elections for the NEC?

Members should ask themselves which group did the most to smear Corbyn? and which candidate has done the most to oppose that group and as a consequence has suffered from it?

There is only one answer – Jo Bird.

    1. Well – Jo Bird certainly has more credibility than most at this sad time – and it would be good to have someone who has a track record of actually opposing the Israel Lobby and speaking truth.

  6. Happy to back any JVL candidate
