Former Labour MP Keith Vaz has announced he will not stand again for re-election. Vaz had been censured by Parliament over an offer to buy drugs for rent boys and had not been endorsed by Labour’s National Executive Committee, but there had been reports he planned to stand as an independent.
Vaz was also involved in the re-suspension of Chris Williamson. After Williamson was reinstated by a three-person NEC panel that included Vaz and right-wing MPs reacted with outrage, Vaz claimed he had been incompetent to participate in the decision because he was taking drugs for a medical condition. A high court judge ruled the decision to resuspend Williamson on the basis of Vaz’s change of heart unlawful.

SteveH, I’m kind of teetering on the edge – not completely unsympathetic, came here to say maybe we shouldn’t use the term “rent boy” anymore, since we no longer use “tart, brass, whore” or any of the other insulting words for people trapped in prostitution – but I find it hard to excuse those who use and abuse prostitutes.
The use of party drugs, even opiates, I’m also reluctant to accept as true addiction or mental illness, or to accept that it absolves a person of responsibility – I’m swayed by the argument that if a person isn’t so habituated to a chemical or activity that it’s impossible to maintain the semblance of normality without it, then it doesn’t constitute true addiction and doesn’t mitigate criminal or antisocial activity, or the submission to blackmail that appears to have happened in Vaz’s case.
I’m an ex-smoker, ex-drinker, ex-drink-driver, ex-casual drug user and ex-casual sex seeker – which last ‘addiction’, in addition to cheating on my partners, disregarded the feelings of my casual encounters and treated everyone who knew me with abominable carelessness.
The least of my ‘addictions’ is that I’m presently cheating on the diet upon which my continued existence depends.
Some shitheads and ex-shitheads like me claim the excuse of addiction – but a weak will and a selfish disregard for others isn’t really treatable by anyone other than the ‘sufferer’ I believe, and doesn’t excuse me or others of a fucking thing.

I appreciate your measured response. Like the standards committee (and you) I am not excusing his actions. I am simply pointing out that none of us are aware of the full circumstances and that during a GE the last thing we should be doing is stoking the MSM’s fires for them by dog-piling KV.
If we win the GE I doubt anyone will give a damn about KV, and if we lose then KV’s personal failings will be the least of our problems.

At least I drew the line at contributing to the delinquency of women trapped into selling sex – I have nothing but contempt for their ‘customers’ and those of their male equivalents.
The use/abuse of alcohol or drugs I don’t condemn at all except when harm to others is caused or risked as by my own drink driving or that of pilots and others responsible for other lives than their own.

I would suggest that neither of us is in a position to pass judgement about whether he is ill or not.
A statement on Vaz’s website said he had been receiving treatment for a “serious mental health condition” for the past three years as a result of the events of August 2016. It said: “He has shared all the medical reports in confidence with the committee.
As far as I’m aware this statement hasn’t been challenged by anyone in a position to have the knowledge to do so.
Regardless of your personal opinion about KV his time as an MP is over now so I really can’t see what will be achieved by slagging him off, it just makes us look like we are at war internally. We have a GE campaign to win so lets concentrate on getting that done first

If the man is as ill as he says he is and I have no reason to doubt him – then he would be doing himself and his constituents very little good by continuing as an MP. Politics is pretty high pressure stuff at the best of times but at the moment we have something of a national crisis going on which is likely to last for several more months.

Whatever Keith Vaz’s demons maybe, we should have compassion for his light. We may agree that he should have done more to help himself but addicts rarely do admit their addiction and do something about it. If he had gone to the party and asked for help I’m sure it would have been given. He also had a responsibility to his constituency and he patently did not carry out his duties properly and for that reason he should stood down and not let the party make the decision for him. As for ChrisW could this lead to further litigation against the party or are they confident that ChrisW being thrown out of the party was justified?

My recollection is that the High Court has already ruled that the re-imposition of CW’s suspension was unlawful but that the later suspension on other matters was legal. It shouldn’t be forgotten that CW’s fate was decided by the NEC not a small Blairite clique.

Your campaign to re-own the word ‘comrade’ is admirable but I suggest we should concentrate on winning the GE first. Experience on the doorstep indicates that most voters find this language a big turn-off so it is counter productive to push it during a GE campaign. We have an election to win first.

I bow to your senior years Joseph. I’m only by comparison, a spring chicken. From deep Tory land yes. (Jeremy Hunt’s constituency .. used to be Virginia Bottomley). A Tory? Definitely NOT!!! Have always voted since of age and have NEVER even been slightly tempted to vote Tory. Heartbreakingly the parents have though. The source of some consternation and puzzlement. Though I love and admire them, they puzzle me GREATLY in that regard. Well educated Oxford and all that. Generosity that surpasses many in scale if not proportion and yet they say extraordinary evidence free things like argue against the minimum wage when it was increased over a decade ago!!! The arguments were without substance. Yet generosity to all callers at the door, even accommodation for vulnerable people for extended periods. I could go on.

I do need the wisdom that age can bring. Plus i have only worked in professions where results have to be concrete and tangible. Ridicule of suggestions / contributions and colleagues are never a good sign. If it is effective in assessing basic socio-political stance then maybe. But as you guess, i feel and consider the necessity for an EFFECTIVE Jeremy led Labour government as VITAL. To be able to implement even some of the over 201 conference policies we need those who believe in them, active and at the centre of government. Those guaranteed to frustrate the implementation, are best out of government and NOT be a Labour MP. We cannot have a positive coalition of saboteurs. Different views yes. Wrecking collaborators with the MSM Iraq invading war criminal Blair and chums like Ian Austin should not have been allowed to leave in their own convenient time.
Sadly Frank Dobson, the former Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras and Health Secretary, has died aged 79.
In 2014 Dobson tried to limit private sector involvement in the NHS. In an interview with the The Guardianhe said that his successor Alan Milburn was “carried away with the idea that the private sector could make a big contribution”.
On Labour’s handling of health policy, he added: “Some of the contracts were a disgrace. They guaranteed these private hospitals a flow of patients, which they never did to a NHS hospital.”
His analysis re the NHS as you outline above, is accurate➕➕➕ But many demonstrated our disapproval of him standing with Blair but against Ken.
ps. on another matter, despite areas for improvement, i feel from my own monitoring, that up to yesterday, support for Labour was growing faster than that for BoJob’s Tories.
LimpDems accepting every self-serving vision-free parasite, will gradually fade to much what they were before ie say anything, do abominable at every opportunity with about 14 or 15% or less of the vote.
Farage (like GArage), the Trumped methane operated puppet’s deflation yesterday, means a rethink and recalculation is needed. But FArage’s strange outfit (not a political party, some sort of iffy stuff… bogus???) anyway support for him will now sink like a stone from now 11ish to less than 7% of the vote.
I am convinced that before FArage’s announcement yesterday, Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour, our Labour could not have been more than 6 points behind Trump’s other trumpped puppet led Tories. So four weeks is enough for us to rise over Trump controlled Tories.
These are strange times, but would the UK elect yet another PM like Blair, who bends over so easily for a US president? A PM who gives such eased access to another George Bush or Trump??? Strange times but gosh, that strange? The Tory faithful elected BoJob. If the rest of the electorate does, then we’re well and truly stuffed.
The whole electorate has now seen the gross failed resistance from the constricted Johnson and the dodgy spiv like FArage. The people of our UK are wise enough to dump BoJob, their Tory Trump. Not ours. No thank you!
