Breaking: Vaz to step down on GE day

Keith Vaz

Former Labour MP Keith Vaz has announced he will not stand again for re-election. Vaz had been censured by Parliament over an offer to buy drugs for rent boys and had not been endorsed by Labour’s National Executive Committee, but there had been reports he planned to stand as an independent.

Vaz was also involved in the re-suspension of Chris Williamson. After Williamson was reinstated by a three-person NEC panel that included Vaz and right-wing MPs reacted with outrage, Vaz claimed he had been incompetent to participate in the decision because he was taking drugs for a medical condition. A high court judge ruled the decision to resuspend Williamson on the basis of Vaz’s change of heart unlawful.

      1. Joseph – As you say you know KV and his family you may have a greater insight than most of us but I don’t anticipate that he’ll be hitting the TV studios to do an ‘Austin’, do you?

    1. Steve H I don’t understand what you are.on about, maybe we are not as smart as you comrade?

      1. Joseph OKEEFE 11/11/2019 at 1:13 pm.

My apologies it wasn’t my intention to confuse you. What I’ve said above seems quite clear and unambiguous to me. Perhaps if you could be more specific about what you don’t understand I can then try and rephrase it to make it easier for you.

      2. Joseph – Have you managed to work out what you are confused about yet?

  1. Vaz has zero credibility and to think he was instrumental in the suspension of Chris Williamson is sickening. In fact why the hell was he anywhere near a panel in judgement of someone whose boots he was unfit to lick? It confirms the incompetence of the Labour Party executive!!!

  2. We should wish him a speedy recovery from his debilitating mental illness and give him our best wishes for his future. Attacking a person personally, particularly when they are unable to defend themselves because of illness would be the wrong thing to do. I have no doubt JC would agree.

    1. SteveH, I’m kind of teetering on the edge – not completely unsympathetic, came here to say maybe we shouldn’t use the term “rent boy” anymore, since we no longer use “tart, brass, whore” or any of the other insulting words for people trapped in prostitution – but I find it hard to excuse those who use and abuse prostitutes.
The use of party drugs, even opiates, I’m also reluctant to accept as true addiction or mental illness, or to accept that it absolves a person of responsibility – I’m swayed by the argument that if a person isn’t so habituated to a chemical or activity that it’s impossible to maintain the semblance of normality without it, then it doesn’t constitute true addiction and doesn’t mitigate criminal or antisocial activity, or the submission to blackmail that appears to have happened in Vaz’s case.

I’m an ex-smoker, ex-drinker, ex-drink-driver, ex-casual drug user and ex-casual sex seeker – which last ‘addiction’, in addition to cheating on my partners, disregarded the feelings of my casual encounters and treated everyone who knew me with abominable carelessness.
The least of my ‘addictions’ is that I’m presently cheating on the diet upon which my continued existence depends.
Some shitheads and ex-shitheads like me claim the excuse of addiction – but a weak will and a selfish disregard for others isn’t really treatable by anyone other than the ‘sufferer’ I believe, and doesn’t excuse me or others of a fucking thing.
Otherwise can’t Tories claim ‘wealth addiction’ excuses everything they do?
When people without needlemarks plead addiction I think of Joy Turner-Hickey’s Mom’s “Don’t you judge me!” after pissing away the family fortune gambling.
And for anyone who doesn’t love “My Name Is Earl” there is no hope of salvation 🙂

I appreciate your measured response. Like the standards committee (and you) I am not excusing his actions. I am simply pointing out that none of us are aware of the full circumstances and that during a GE the last thing we should be doing is stoking the MSM’s fires for them by dog-piling KV.
If we win the GE I doubt anyone will give a damn about KV, and if we lose then KV’s personal failings will be the least of our problems.

      2. Joseph, not at all hard on myself – my comment wasn’t even close to full disclosure.
At least I drew the line at contributing to the delinquency of women trapped into selling sex – I have nothing but contempt for their ‘customers’ and those of their male equivalents.

The use/abuse of alcohol or drugs I don’t condemn at all except when harm to others is caused or risked as by my own drink driving or that of pilots and others responsible for other lives than their own.
Politicians’ decisions affect more people’s lives than any driver or pilot – I think the least we should demand of them is that they’re not drunk or under the influence of other mind-altering substances when they make those decisions.

Another thing’s been irritating me – was anyone else appalled at the BBC’s Naga Munchetty blatantly manipulating the emotions of an old soldier to make him weep at the fall of his comrades while the fucking cameras zoomed in?
They just keep broadcasting it over and over again.
Getting vulnerable people to emote for the camera seems to be one of the basic skills demanded of ‘journalists’ these days.
It used to be that editors would cut away to save guests’ embarrassment – now they deliberately create the circumstances for the sake of “Good TV.”
        I find it despicable.

      3. You’ve raised a lot of difficult issues, David, and that central question of the balance between an expectation of responsibility and compassion isn’t one that is suited to simple resolution.

As far as Vaz is concerned, I have to say that if ‘illness’ is explanation, he’s been ‘ill’ without cure for a very long time.

      4. An alcoholic thief is still a thief. He should have been turfed out immediately. It took me 30 years to get of the sauce. What I did was wrong then and remains so. He was wrong and his vile behaviour brought a good man down, at least it played a part. Was he feeling better the time he changed his mind?

  3. Great news but tinged with sadness that this prat was party to the ousting of CHris Williamson , pity all this didn’t come to light well in advance of any input he had

  4. I don’t much understand why being a person of little respect for the office of labour MP or the norms of decent behaviour can be described as suffering from a mental illness.Vaz has never been a good mp and wishing him a speedy recovery is has deluded has the mp himself.Remember the reason why so many loyal socialist comrades have been subjected to such cruelty is because lies have been told and repeated enough for the lie to become a fact.So before insulting people with true mental illness who struggle daily, dont come on here waiving false platitudes and repeating lies regarding mental illness of vaz. This is the reason the Labour party is in such a mess.Believing your own lies is the start of the Rot!and has cost Chris Williamson and many others their political lives.I come on here to learn somthing of value, not drivel.

    1. Joseph OKEEFE 11/11/2019 at 12:43 am

I would suggest that neither of us is in a position to pass judgement about whether he is ill or not.

A statement on Vaz’s website said he had been receiving treatment for a “serious mental health condition” for the past three years as a result of the events of August 2016. It said: “He has shared all the medical reports in confidence with the committee.

As far as I’m aware this statement hasn’t been challenged by anyone in a position to have the knowledge to do so.

Regardless of your personal opinion about KV his time as an MP is over now so I really can’t see what will be achieved by slagging him off, it just makes us look like we are at war internally. We have a GE campaign to win so lets concentrate on getting that done first

      1. Steve H I know vaz and his family who are long suffering with his games over many years and he has caused much distress and embarresment to his own asian Catholic community origanaly from india. My comments were aimed at you and your false platitudes and the whole concept of promoting lies inside the Labour party that has done so much damage in the AS scam..The socialist Labour party will not survive if we promote lies and propaganda so basically try to learn some humility and stop pretending to be the responsible adult.

      2. I’m sorry Joseph but unless you want to explain yourself a little better than you have above I haven’t a clue what you are on about.

      3. Steve H perhaps its a good thing you don’t understand and I doubt you and I are even on the same planet as far as socialim goes…..so end of

      4. Joseph OKEEFE at 3:29 am

Joseph – What on earth has socialism got to do with whether it’s a good idea, or not, to dog-pile Vaz for his personal failings.

    2. Excellent. I’ve had enough of this transatlantic 12 step shit. It has been mangled to such an extent that it is unrecognisable. Doing the steps is a hard, painful thing and you can be sure of one certainty and that is you have to be alert. Nothing about his behaviour has shown that he has any empathy for his victims. It didn’t happen once. When did he discover that he had issues. Some of his colleagues must have known because some tories certainly did. Yes I am harsh because that’s how you begin the process of getting better. Ignore the crap in the media, the failure rate is huge and 6 months b and b thanks to Kyle bloke ain’t going to do it. Recovery projects make huge profits because they have revolving doors. The whole area needs to be honestly addressed. Onwards to the next GE, God alone knows what we will say on the knock. Regards.

    3. Good post. His illness didn’t make him forget to claim exes or threaten to stand as an Independent. He got caught and that’s all there is to it. Who honestly believes that he was going to change his behaviour regardless? Labour what next?

  5. If the man is as ill as he says he is and I have no reason to doubt him – then he would be doing himself and his constituents very little good by continuing as an MP. Politics is pretty high pressure stuff at the best of times but at the moment we have something of a national crisis going on which is likely to last for several more months.
Vaz has had over 30 years as being an MP that’s a very good crack at it but common sense clearly suggests that he should now call it a day

  6. Oh dear Keith! There is no justice is there? You do everything they ask, and still they throw you under the bus.

  7. Whatever Keith Vaz’s demons maybe, we should have compassion for his light. We may agree that he should have done more to help himself but addicts rarely do admit their addiction and do something about it. If he had gone to the party and asked for help I’m sure it would have been given. He also had a responsibility to his constituency and he patently did not carry out his duties properly and for that reason he should stood down and not let the party make the decision for him. As for ChrisW could this lead to further litigation against the party or are they confident that ChrisW being thrown out of the party was justified?

    1. Yes Chris fox,the members will pay once again for a decision or non decision and w we the membership shall once again be involved in the destruction of of a loyal mp against the wishes of the largest socialist party in Europe.

    2. Chris fox. I don’t think the 2 male prostitutes he tried to get it on with tipped his sanity or what he stuck up his nose,IT was clearly the strain of flogging washing machines, whilst trying to hold down a job in parliament. Its tough out there in the big smoke….don’t you know.!….ps I don’t think the male prostitutes dressed up as Demons?

    3. Perhaps the party should have done more… surely many were aware of his problems?

Chris Williamson was left little choice but to resign from the LP after appalling suspensions and treatment by the party and NEC… No doubt LP/Momentum will throw the kitchen sink behind his replacement and Watson’s replacement candidates… I’m not reading anything positive about either.

LP really has a long way to go before it can call itself a democratic party and party of compassion and for people… it seems it’s only some people that it cares about internally and democracy can be sidestepped with weasel words if MPs don’t like the result. I am left wondering and worrying if this would translate to LP in Gov with a slew of same old MPs in Parliament?

      1. Maria, i could not agree with you more.
It seems clear that winning an election is easier than having a WORTHWHILE and EFFECTIVE government. How, with protected, pampered yet sabotaging MPs within?
Reservoirs of “kindness and gentleness” for the treacherous monsters, the vile pretenders determined to keep same old same old.
Yet we see a flip-flopped, senseless betrayal, shameless ingratitude, the opposite of gentleness and rough “justice” to the hardworking, insightful and articulate decent people like CHRIS WILLIAMSON.

How can we be better IN GOVERNMENT than the charlatans, Boris Johnson and Swinson? Or better than the fickle untrustworthy Farage? Farage took instruction from Trump and promptly followed them. Capitulated! Jaw droopingly, he said yesterday that he will NOT be returning the thousands of pounds his now surplus to requirements MPs paid him. He said it clearly and with jovial laughter to Eddie Mair yesterday PM on LBC.

Now, of course it is an extremely low bar, the bottom feeders: Tory enabling Swinson, Trumped instruction taking Farage, Deceitful Boris Johnson. The pathological pif-feller ever unfaithful to truth, Smug BoJob smudge piffle. Of course too low. But,

We must be our best selves. Reflection is acutely needed by all who use a certain word to describe our supporters and associates. That word is rarely used by others. Best we banish it. Stop using it to address or describe each other. Instead lets be it, enact it. Stop saying it. BE a “comrade” to each other and start with being a worthwhile brave comrade to Chris Williamson. COMRADE, without action, is hollow. Hollow noise.
Pleasant chimes. Pleasant until the crunch and you realise too late, it lacked dependable faithful substance. Pleasant random sounds are ok, until you need reliable favourable winds, strong sails, sound reliable boats and a clear incisive decisive robust captain.

  8. Double dutch comments do not make a solution for the injustice of loosing Chris Williamson and many others …wake up and veiw the destruction of socialism. The Labour party and socialism the big debate after the election

  9. If comrade Vaz has been suffering from a serious mental illness, why has any credence been given to his actions against Chris Williamson, unless……….?

    1. Thankyou steve Richards….united we stand devided we disintegrate solidarity comrades

    2. It appears that the rules about ‘outstanding complaints’ aren’t being universally applied

Labour organiser James Cunningham picked for West Bromwich West

“Another one of the party’s community organisers has been selected for a Labour-held seat, as James Cunningham was picked to replace retiring Adrian Bailey in West Bromwich West on Saturday.

Cunningham is thought to be a former member of the Trotskyist group Alliance for Workers Liberty (AWL) who became a prominent activist in Momentum South Birmingham and later took a job with Labour.”

“LabourList has been told that Cunningham is the subject of a number of outstanding complaints made to the Labour Party. A complaint about bullying from 2018 alleged that his behaviour as an organiser affected the mental health of a Labour candidate.

Another was submitted by Jenny Nolan, who says she has had no response to her complaint. She compared the situation to that in Bassetlaw, where a candidate was barred from standing on the basis of having unresolved complaints against her.”
      https://labourlist.org/2019/11/labour-organiser-james-cunningham-picked-for-west-bromwich-west/

    3. Well said so many, despite the usual incoherent, shortsighted, duplicitous, “drivel” from a usual suspect few.

Incomprehensible still from some, the sincere but perpetual fear of upsetting an already hostile MSM despite all frantic and dizzying efforts to appease them and their little helpers. So odd, that despite all the evidence since Jeremy’s election as Labour leader, the priority of McD and the NEC remains the pathological pursuit of approval. Approval of those with stated determined diametrically opposed ethos and aims to our own.

So determined are the miscreants, that Ms Jess Phillips, threatens without shame, she “WILL KNIFE JEREMY IN THE FRONT!” Will Phillips also, like the Carl Beech enabling Tom Watson, or the Boris Johnson endorsing Ian Austin, or McNicol, be gifted the opportunity to resign and coup again at a time of her choosing? Will Phillips and Vaz and Watson and more be “elevated” to the other place?…To trample and frustrate every needed policy? To leak more manifestoes? To slander Jeremy and the over HALF A MILLION strong membership? To make more emotional speeches about bullying parliamentary language and aggressive political environment, while saying loudly and clearly, they will “WORK NIGHT AND DAY” to destroy Jeremy⁉️ They won’t stab Jeremy in the back. No. It needs repeating, because she is yet to be expelled…

❌EVIDENCE❌ : JESS PHILLIPS MP stated OPENLY: “SHE WILL KNIFE JEREMY IN THE FRONT!” When will she be deselected and expelled??? When will she be reported to the police? When will Jeremy be protected by a phalanx of security in the light of Phillip’s THREAT OF VIOLENCE? When will Dianne Abbott, ALSO abused verbally by Phillips, be given protection? When will the MSM give wall to wall coverage of such?

When next will Phillips be pontificating on knife crime?

When will Labour members stop being timid, and speak up clearly to call out wrong and support right?

      1. ps NOT a response to SH. It is definitely not.

      2. Please, please. Nothing is achieved by wild exaggeration.

I’m a paid-up member of the ‘Can’t Stand Jess Phillips (‘The Mouth’) Club’. But pretending that her use of a common image was a literal incitement to violence is plain daft. We have enough of that sort of shite from the enemy.

  10. Just a thought how much involved was Vaz in the decission making over the expulsion of many of our comrades….Hes been suffering for a number of years according to steve H,in this mental health illness. Class action for any lawyer who wants an open goal.and the membership to pay for.No doubt he will be found to be a pathological liar and we the membership will pay, either way we Will pay.. Step up Chris Williamson. How much an mps salary and pension Plus Lawyers Barrister and popular QC,plus the damage to the Labour party by our NEC.. How much longer do we have to ignore the decision of the NEC and let them bankrupt the Labour party.?And all the rest of the victims of the NEC. Go on Steve H Quote from the Bible or some other myth

    1. My recollection is that the High Court has already ruled that the re-imposition of CW’s suspension was unlawful but that the later suspension on other matters was legal. It shouldn’t be forgotten that CW’s fate was decided by the NEC not a small Blairite clique.

      1. Steve H. I am impressed with your NEC clique wasnt blairite. Okay cool, thats okay then,.. What about kangaroo courts and justice…don’t answer I don’t want another essay writing about NEC, NCC and more computer lodgic.I will just ask for a print out next week… Computer malfunction shutting down.?

      2. Joseph OKEEFE 11/11/2019 at 2:43 pm

I am sorry if you misunderstood me but the point I was making was that it wasn’t a small clique (Blairite or otherwise) that decided on CW’s fate but a meeting of the full NEC which we are told is now left leaning, apparently.

  11. Would you press the button
Excuse me but your not on your fucking Playstation now

Trident is neither a deterrent nor independent
    Michael Portillo Tory defence Minister
What did he know that the tin pot generals, warmongers and sabre rattlers dont

Is there a war that cheap and nasty Tory party havnt supported, to put our Armed Forces in harm’s way to scrape a few more cheap votes

Have they conveniently forgotten the 10% cuts to funding and the low point of sending out redundancy notices to our troops in Afghanistan

Still you dont have to worry if your JSM when your at least 27 miles behind the frontline
Because your better than the rest of us

  12. All NEC votes should be public knowledge. The LP is no more democratic now than when Corbyn came on the scene which shows how much it is still in the grip of the right wing.

    1. Agreed. Winning an election is easier than having a WORTHWHILE and EFFECTIVE government.

      1. Your campaign to re-own the word ‘comrade’ is admirable but I suggest we should concentrate on winning the GE first. Experience on the doorstep indicates that most voters find this language a big turn-off so it is counter productive to push it during a GE campaign. We have an election to win first.

  13. Proud to be a comrade and proud to support the socialist Labour party. We are not trying to convert comrades just a positive tick for polling day….and get them on the computer for next time around. We can win this comrades and help the whole country from being a minor colony of Trumps USA.Dont worry too much comrade SH trump wont allow any comrades in the US version of freedom and democracy. That should keep some of our moderates happy ☺…solidarity comrades.!

  14. It will be clear to other readers that i urge the very opposite. “Best we banish it. Stop using it to describe or address each other…”
I am totally unsurprised that the word is a turn off on the doorstep. It is counter productive and i have never spoken it. In fact doubt i’v ever written it until the post this PM. I agree with those on the doorstep. It excludes. As stated in my post, it is almost unused on these shores, except by many amongst us. NEVER by me, not even in this reply. Best banish addressing each other and strangers with it. Instead, live and BE the meaning. Start with justice for Chris Williamson and others.

    1. Signpostwindchimes…I really don’t think even when I joined the Labour party many years ago and served as a councillor that it would be a brilliant strategic move to address somone on the doorstep as comrade, not unless we wanted a trip to the funny farm or a poke in the eye.Steve H brought the suggestion in to strengthen a lame argument that is not a serious issue unless one is irritated by socialism and the move within the party towards it.I am nearly 70years old and can remember my grandfather using the term comrade and we always addressed the party mtgs with comrades and I tend to address party members I don’t know has comrade to gauge a reaction..I read your veiw that comrade would not win many votes and I do like to get people on board without making them think that I am a recruitment sergeant for the army or we are at war .Ps maybe we are with the Tory party comrade?

      1. I bow to your senior years Joseph. I’m only by comparison, a spring chicken. From deep Tory land yes. (Jeremy Hunt’s constituency .. used to be Virginia Bottomley). A Tory? Definitely NOT!!! Have always voted since of age and have NEVER even been slightly tempted to vote Tory. Heartbreakingly the parents have though. The source of some consternation and puzzlement. Though I love and admire them, they puzzle me GREATLY in that regard. Well educated Oxford and all that. Generosity that surpasses many in scale if not proportion and yet they say extraordinary evidence free things like argue against the minimum wage when it was increased over a decade ago!!! The arguments were without substance. Yet generosity to all callers at the door, even accommodation for vulnerable people for extended periods. I could go on.
So Joseph, people are complicated and realise that even super intelligent educated people can be blind to what may seem obvious to others infinitely less “fortunate”. Well meaning people can be misunderstood and evil few given free passage to do more evil.

But glad you point out your experience, it helped me reflect again on mine and understand my puzzlement at the widespread use of the word since becoming aware of JC and joining the party to support him. And now being in the Corbyn supporting groups etc.
Your reply is valued as it shows how easy misinterpretation of words… signals can be… text and subtext.
        Our experiences shapes our interpretations.

I strive to be over clear and still sometimes fail. So to emphasise my central point. Let us BE comradely and comrades and not just use the word and then much wrong the excellent likes of Chris Williamson.

      2. Ha! yes, you are quite right. Quite puzzling post from two usual suspects. They don’t seem to appreciate Jeremy’s rare quality. Or maybe they see it, and so are determined to destroy him and discourage us.
Not sure why they feel they will succeed. Odd to use their time so. Are they really so afraid of the positive?

Constructive criticism is good and vital, but unwarranted browbeating and personal insults to others here i find quite strange. Of course i give as good as i get. But surely we should prioritise our ire for the self declared haters of Jeremy… Tories without and within. In poor disguise and none.

I do need the wisdom that age can bring. Plus i have only worked in professions where results have to be concrete and tangible. Ridicule of suggestions / contributions and colleagues are never a good sign. When projects are critical or even just commercial of significance ie £$¥, one needs to nurture an environment where no question is ridiculous and no person is ridiculed for not knowing this nor that nor making errors. All need to feel safe in admitting errors, asking question and making contributions how ever eccentric / off the wall they may seem.
So those that ridicule and insult without cause, seem quite suspect to me. Thanks for your clarification. Saves me over thinking😊😊😊

  15. Did not think of that. Thanks Joseph, if it can help data collection and analysis good, But i am just heartbroken re: Chris Williamson and others not receiving treatmeant that matches the word. If it is effective in assessing basic socio-political stance then maybe. But as you guess, i feel and consider the necessity for an EFFECTIVE Jeremy led Labour government as VITAL. To be able to implement even some of the over 201 conference policies we need those who believe in them, active and at the centre of government. Those guaranteed to frustrate the implementation, are best out of government and NOT be a Labour MP. We cannot have a positive coalition of saboteurs. Different views yes. Wrecking collaborators with the MSM Iraq invading war criminal Blair and chums like Ian Austin should not have been allowed to leave in their own convenient time.

  16. Sadly Frank Dobson, the former Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras and Health Secretary, has died aged 79.

In 2014 Dobson tried to limit private sector involvement in the NHS. In an interview with the The Guardianhe said that his successor Alan Milburn was “carried away with the idea that the private sector could make a big contribution”.

On Labour’s handling of health policy, he added: “Some of the contracts were a disgrace. They guaranteed these private hospitals a flow of patients, which they never did to a NHS hospital.”

    1. His analysis re the NHS as you outline above, is accurate➕➕➕ But many demonstrated our disapproval of him standing with Blair but against Ken.

ps. on another matter, despite areas for improvement, i feel from my own monitoring, that up to yesterday, support for Labour was growing faster than that for BoJob’s Tories.

LimpDems accepting every self-serving vision-free parasite, will gradually fade to much what they were before ie say anything, do abominable at every opportunity with about 14 or 15% or less of the vote.
Farage (like GArage), the Trumped methane operated puppet’s deflation yesterday, means a rethink and recalculation is needed. But FArage’s strange outfit (not a political party, some sort of iffy stuff… bogus???) anyway support for him will now sink like a stone from now 11ish to less than 7% of the vote.
I am convinced that before FArage’s announcement yesterday, Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour, our Labour could not have been more than 6 points behind Trump’s other trumpped puppet led Tories. So four weeks is enough for us to rise over Trump controlled Tories.

These are strange times, but would the UK elect yet another PM like Blair, who bends over so easily for a US president? A PM who gives such eased access to another George Bush or Trump??? Strange times but gosh, that strange? The Tory faithful elected BoJob. If the rest of the electorate does, then we’re well and truly stuffed.

The whole electorate has now seen the gross failed resistance from the constricted Johnson and the dodgy spiv like FArage. The people of our UK are wise enough to dump BoJob, their Tory Trump. Not ours. No thank you!
