Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced this week, at the ‘World Economic Forum’ in the billionaires’ playground of Davos, that she will ‘soften’ planned tax changes to force ‘non-doms’ – hugely wealthy people who live here but register to pay tax in a different country – to pay UK tax, effectively handing them a huge payout.
But Starmer’s Labour, always determined to out-Tory the Tories, is not happy with greasing the palms of the already rich – and so the government has announced that it will freeze Housing Benefit – state support with obscene rents that are relied on by around 2.5 million poor people in the UK, around 1.1 million of them poor pensioners.
Freezing housing benefit means that the value of the benefit – only available to the poorest – will be eroded every year. UK rents increased by 3.9% in the twelve months to October 2024 – but this was the lowest rate of increase for three years during which it was as high as 9.1% and they are likely to rise more quickly again.
The latest announcement comes on top of the removal of the Winter Fuel Allowance payment from around ten million pensioners, which will kill at least four thousand older people a year, Labour’s war on disabled people and its decision to keep 1.5 million children in grinding poverty by continuing the consciously-cruel two-child benefit cap, even though it costs far less to scrap it than to keep it.
Keir Starmer’s ‘red Tory’ party is worse even than the appalling blue version.
