‘Worse than a camel whip’, says released detainee
Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital who was abducted by Israeli occupation forces after the final destruction of his hospital and the arbitrary detention of hundreds of staff and patients, has been tortured by his captors according to badly-wounded patients – eventually released by Israeli troops – who witnessed the events.
The occupation, following its usual pattern of excuses for its atrocities, has falsely claimed that Abu Safiya, who had refused to leave his patients despite suffering severe leg injuries in an earlier Israeli attack on the hospital, is a ‘senior Hamas operative’. He was last seen publicly during the abduction, leading to an iconic photograph as he walked toward his attackers and their tanks.
In a statement, one of the released captives describes Israeli soldiers – who have murdered and tortured to death many Palestinian detainees, including medical personnel, and burned to death around fifty patients and staff during the destruction of the Kamal Adwan – forcing the doctor and others to strip before whipping him with a ‘street power cable’:
Occupation soldiers whipped Dr Hussan Abu Safiya with a street power cable nicknamed a ‘Norwegian Cord’ for its brutality, which is worse than a kurbaj (camel whip). They forced him and other staff to undress.
This took place at the ‘field investigation’ in the AI-Fakhoura area before he was taken to an unknown location, leaving his fate unknown.
Health workers in countries around the world have been protesting against the detention and mistreatment of Dr Abu Safiya and other health and emergency workers, and demanding that their governments act to secure their immediate release and the restoration of health services in Gaza, which Israel is obliterating.
Genocide-denying UK PM Keir Starmer and his Foreign Secretary David Lammy, despite finding time to witter about knighthoods and royalty and pay tribute to deceased old politicians, have yet to even mention Israel’s destruction of the hospital and its illegal abduction and torture of its staff and patients, let alone condemn Israel’s crimes. Instead, Starmer is waging a ‘lawfare’ war on UK journalists and activists who expose them.
