Old people will freeze because of Winter Fuel Allowance cut to fill invented ‘black hole’ – and Labour knows it
The Labour party’s cut to the Winter Fuel Allowance will kill around 4,000 pensioners this winter – according to the party’s own research.
Labour’s analysis, published during the 2017 general election campaign, warned that the Tories’ plans under then-PM Theresa May to cut the allowance for millions of pensioners would be deadly, leading directly to the deaths of around 4,000 people. Called ‘the single biggest attack on pensioners in a generation’, it combined with the Tories’ ‘dementia tax’ plans and Corbyn-led Labour’s spectacular and fully-costed manifesto and actual hope of meaningful change to almost put the Tories out of power.
Labour’s excuse for the cut to the vital benefit, which gives pensioners ÂŁ250-600 toward heating costs, is the supposed – and apparently invented – ‘black hole’ in the national finances, a ‘hole’ that is a pinprick in the national expenditure of around 1.2 trillion pounds and one that the government could create money to fill, if it actually existed, at the click of a key, or with a small tax rise on the wealthiest.
Other government statistics show that the cut is aimed primarily at over-75s, at women more than men and at those living in the north most of all:
The red version of the Tories is no less committed to needless and deadly cuts than the blue – and just as unconcerned by the prospect of mass social murder.

Last week, the Times reported EU study suggesting 200 000 cold-related deaths in England & Wales, so 4 000 is bit conservative (sic).
Talking into account winter temperature variation, well-over 20 000 in Scotland.
It’s most likely 4k extra deaths. All avoidable, of course – like Grenfell.
And like Grenfell, the politicians will absolve themselves.
Now that is very scary.
Looks like our ‘lovely’ Labour government are looking to liquidate more of us – this crew clearly considers us redundant and expensive “stock” (remember that moment of truth from Lord David Freud? – 2007 it was) … just think about all those pensions, all that NHS care, all that social care … think of the money … you can just imagine Starmer and Reeves’ eyes lighting up at the prospect …
I also see Starmer’s business adviser, Varun Chandra, is one of Boris Johnson’s Downing Street Covid Party cronies. So what are we getting here? Same business chums, same ‘help yourself’ policies as the last lot?
