Tory leadership contender wants to make saying ‘God is great’ illegal

Islamophobia ‘alive and well’ in the Tory party – of either rosette colour

Tory party leadership hopeful Robert Jenrick has called for Muslims who shout ‘Allahu Akbar’ – ‘God is great’ in public to be arrested, to the justified outrage of Muslim groups and anyone who respects freedom of religion. Worse, he has done so during extreme Islamophobic riots and terrorism by the far right.

Responding to a question about ‘two-tier policing’ – a frequent whine of the far-right even though in fact the fascist mobs have been gently treated while peaceful left-wing marches against genocide are tarred as ‘hate’ – Jenrick responded by, you’ve guessed it, smearing peaceful marches against genocide:

I thought it was quite wrong that someone could shout ‘Allahu Akbar’ on the streets of London and not be immediately arrested or project genocidal chants onto Big Ben, and that person not be immediately arrested.

Muslims use ‘Allahu Akbar’ in prayers and a range of circumstances, including as praise to God despite injustice or hardship. The former immigration minister’s grotesque comments caused justified outrage among Muslim politicians and activists. The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said:

Mr Jenrick’s claim that politicians should choose their words wisely during this crisis rings hollow as he reaches for Islamophobic rhetoric, the lowest common denominator for demagogues.

It only goes to show that institutional Islamophobia is alive and well in the Conservative Party.

Blue Tory Islamophobia is matched on the red side of the party, with the Labour Muslim Network reporting that few Muslims trust Keir Starmer even to deal properly with it within the party, let alone in society. Pro-Israel Labour door-knockers were caught on video making grossly Islamophobic comments to Muslim voters who said they were not going to vote for Labour during the recent general election, where a number of the worst offenders lost their seats to pro-Palestine independents. Israel has murdered almost 200,000 Palestinians since 7 October – and on that date killed a host of its own people.

  1. Jenrick:
” I thought it was quite wrong that someone could shout ‘Allahu Akbar’ on the streets of London and not be immediately arrested ”

It tells you all you need to know about this despicable “hopeful” for the Toe Rag leadership.

  2. BEFORE it’s a ‘freedom of religion’ issue, it’s a ‘freedom of thought’ issue . Freedom of thought is the target our enemies intend/need to destroy.

Freedom of thought is the life-force of humanity, freedom and science. It is the non-physical parts of a person, their rational, emotional, ethical and spiritual dimensions: Their”soul”.

Without Freedom of Thought there is no art, no progress, no science, no freedom.

Fascists and the PtB – whether we call them ‘the establishment’, ‘the elite’, the state, the WEF, the Military/pharmaceutical Industrial Complex, the ‘deep state’ or the oligarchy, etc. – FEAR Freedom of thought. It is their antibody – and the guarantor of everything beautiful in the universe, including science, knowledge, socialism and peace and justice.

  3. Yes yes and ban people for OMG…and what about unelected clerics as part of the givt of the country…an Starmer wanting more of them???

  4. First thing USA Presidents do once elected is to thank God.
Go in my city any Saturday afternoon and are a number of mainly white Christian street preachers promoting The Glory of God and Jesus.

    1. Can anyone remember the ‘Devils prayer’ at junior school
The last line was ‘shit shite amen’

  5. The Devil’s Prayer – That’s a new one for me.

Jesus saves – The Holy Spirit gives credit.

  6. Tory peer Baroness Sayeeda Warsi condemned his remarks, saying:

“Every day before we start parliamentary business in the Commons and Lords we say a prayer and praise God – we say our parliamentary version of Allah hu Akbars at the heart of democracy – a process Robert Jenrick is a part of. This language from Jenrick is more of his usual nasty divisive rhetoric – he is such a tool.”
