Party loses more than half its councillors, making independents the largest council group
The Labour party has lost Burnley council after the mass resignation of more than half of its councillors over Keir Starmer’s support for Israel’s war crimes in Gaza and his refusal to call for a ceasefire to protect Gaza’s more than two million civilians.
More than ten thousand civilians have been killed by Israeli bombs, close to half of them children, with many more severely injured and unknown numbers trapped dead and dying under rubble. Hospitals, schools and refugee camps have been repeatedly targeted, with the Israeli military admitting that it has not even been sure whether Hamas personnel and infrastructure have been present in the destroyed facilities.
Last week, the then-Labour group leader on Burnley council, along with the leader of nearby Pendle Labour group, demanded Keir Starmer’s resignation over his complicity in the mass murder and ethnic cleansing. Starmer’s continued inaction to save civilians has led the resigning councillors to conclude that:
After exhausting every available option, we have arrived to the conclusion that the current party stance on Palestine does not align with the values we hold dear.

The resignations mean that Labour has fallen from the controlling group on the council to barely ahead of the Greens, LibDems and Tories, as this graphic from Stats for Lefties shows:

Labour also lost its majority on Oxford council a week ago after a string of resignations over Gaza and has been told to call for a ceasefire even by the right-wing Labour mayor and councillors in Newham. Starmer is reported to be facing growing unrest even among his Shadow Cabinet – and the disgust of the million-plus people marching each weekend across the UK to demand a ceasefire. He is also demonstrating a lack of political nous that should be astonishing but isn’t – a huge majority of British voters want an immediate ceasefire.

Congratulations to everyone preparedf to take a principled stand.
I think Party once known as Labour is having to learn the hard way that people who have a conscience will not condone war crimes and Human right breaches and not only say Not in my name but make it abundantly clear that enough is more than enough. My heartfelt thanks to the councillors up and down the country who have shown compassion and Integrity. We need more people/politicians like you.
Good.
More of this required for keef to get the message that he IS NOT the party.
But, but he’s a human rights lawyer.
And as an afterthought
….Unlucky keef, your lot can’t even coalesce with the ‘rags (or any of the others) to form a majority.
That do for me, to see this replicated – just enough (labour) councillors across the board that spew keef, so they lose overall control of those councils and can’t even regain shared control with a single other party.
Very good but no white councillors have resigned.
This is not a Muslim issue but rather a humanitarian one.
It suggests also that Labour could have its work cut out to win back the parliamentary seat.
Everybody needs to have a ‘red line’ that they will not cross. These councillors have done that.
Reply to Tony
I agree with you 100%.
1) This is not a Muslim issue. You don’t have to be a Muslim to see that the massacre of over 4000 children is WRONG. It cannot be justified under ANY circumstances. Neither can the massacre of innocent men and women ever be justified. It is butchery by Israel plain and simple. The UK government and the Labour opposition have allied themselves unconditionally with Israel, supplied the Israeli army( I refuse to call it a Defence force) with weapons and military training and turned their backs on International law in order to uphold the “right” of Israel to massacre any Palestinian it chooses. This makes them complicit in war crimes.
2) I agree that these Councillors have red lines and I respect them for it. However it is clear that most of those elected to various councils, the NEC, parliament etc do not have the same red lines.
These people have not resigned and are clearly happy to be members of a party whose leader is a self proclaimed Zionist on which basis he will not condemn Israel’s barbarism and but who continually parrots the Zionist mantra that Israel has the ” right to defend itself” even when that defence involves the killing of 4000 Palestinian children.
The cowardice and self interest of these blatant Starmer/Zionist supporting careerists will never be forgotten by decent people who I hope will demonstare their revulsion by boycotting Starmers Labour at every future election particularly the next Gerneral Election.
Smartboy, that was a good post. We should never underestimate the power and force of the pole.
Are you referring to these polls
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_for_the_next_United_Kingdom_general_election#2023
Tony, you disregard the force of the pole.
Smartboy – Given that every PPC that ‘the left’ has put forward appears to have lost their deposit what is the credible alternative that you and your comrades are offering the electorate.
ps Have you forgotten that RLB ‘the lefts’ candidate for the leadership proclaimed herself to be a Zionist.
Fuck me! You really are a bore!!
PW -…………and your answer to my entirely reasonable question is?
He didn’t realise that I was referring to the greasy pole.
Reply to Steve H
This is not about Left and Right its about the merciless killing of innocent people , thousand of little children dead at the hands of Zionist crazies who are being supported in their blood letting by the UK parliament many of whom are Zionists too either by conviction or because they have been bought and paid for by Israel lobbyists.
I don’t expect anything else from the Tories but I expected more from Labour MPs – right left and centre.
I am so angry and feel totally let down and won’t be supporting any Labour MP who parrots the Zionist mantra that Israel has the right to defend itself even when that defence involves the slaughter of innocent children.
Good heaven’s, even Hammond would have objected to these atrocities. Dunno about the greasy spiv who came before though.
You have been told on numerous occasions what the alternative – compared to the collapsing TINA paradigm you shill for like a cheap prostitute – consists of Billy. So spare us the terminological inexactitude’s.
A confident Labour Party offering it and not weighted down with clueless, incompetent and malevolent parasites such as yourself would most certainly attract the necessary votes. Which, despite the albatrosses who currently run the shit show it has become – who are bought and paid for by foreign interests – deliberately undermining it, almost did in 2017.
As it is, with the UK Branch of the Uni-party offering no alternatives to the failed and collapsing post-modernist bullshit you are still desperately clinging to there exists a more then even chance of the NOTA vote exceeding 20 million – assuming next years scheduled GE actually takes place.
In regard to RLB, who, other than RLB, originally designated themselves with the mantle of the ‘left’ candidate? An oxymoran given the stark reality that Zionism has long since morphed into a fascist/nazi doctrine.
Dave – Oh dear, is yet more empty excuses & rhetoric all you have to offer?😞
The SCG obviously voted for RLB to be their chosen candidate.🤔
Its still an exponential multiple of the shite you are selling Billy. So desperate are you to discredit anything other than TINA without substantive evidence you neglect to defend TINA itself. Deliberately so because you are selling a discredited and unworkable model.
As for the SCG; given its long lack of moral and ethical courage on issue after issue where they could have taken a stance and a lead – the present position on Gaza being the latest – any reference to them lacks any serious credibility.
If that’s the best you can do its going to be great fun watching you go down with the sinking ship you have tied yourself to.
ps Have you forgotten that RLB ‘the lefts’ candidate for the leadership proclaimed herself to be a Zionist
Have you forgotten that keef promised continuity Corbyn?
So, apart from being “best of a bad bunch” just WHAT was it about the blockheaded one’s leftist policy pledges convinced you to vote for him, hmmm?
Gobshite.
She was and remains an idiot.
She also said she did not know what BDS stood for so asked the Board of Deputies to explain it to her before declaring it a bad thing. Thus my comment she’s an idiot.
I’m dropping the , power of the pole. It’s the ‘hold of the junket’.

Well, wee gobshite, you gonna answer MY entirely reasonable question?
I’m quite sure everyone who posts on this site (as well as the lurkers) are all on tenterhooks, eagerly awaiting your latest demonstration of unbounded sagacity…
Was it keef’s continuity Corbyn, or his unequivocal zionism tipped the balance?
Don’t be coy, now. Spill ’em. We’re all of us in dire need of your enlightenment.
Ditto with the question put here:

Which has been put multiple times to be met with not even tumbleweed.
It certainly has all gone quite over there.
What’s up Billy? Goat got your tongue?
If that’s the best you can do its going to be great fun watching you go down with the sinking ship you have tied yourself to.
The rodent will no doubt try to gnaw through the rope to try to extricate itself when the time comes…Doesn’t realise it’s made of steel.
Your graphic shows 11 red blob Labour councillors remaining not the figure 10 shown in the accompanying box.
