Turner’s visit to Chesterfield can’t prevent overwhelming vote for Beckett by communications workers in Unite’s newest sector – and others join them on same day as nominations surge
Chesterfield CMA branch of Unite the Union voted unanimously on Tuesday night to nominate Howard Beckett in the election to become the union’s next general secretary.
The vote came as Orkney Island branch and Aramark Cota Offshore branch also added their nominations to Beckett’s burgeoning support, taking his nominations to at least 17 with the nomination phase not yet even a week old. The Chesterfield vote will come as a blow to rival Steve Turner, who was there in person last week to speak.
Other branches in Chesterfield have yet to vote and may opt differently and there is a long way to go even in this first phase of the contest, but so far Beckett’s rivals have picked up only a couple of nominations among them, while at least five have come on board for Beckett just in the last twenty-four hours.
