Move to ‘restore trust in local politics’ after arrest of previous mayor on suspicion of conspiracy to bribe and intimidate
Liverpool Walton MP Dan Carden has publicly called, together with Transparency UK, on Labour’s three prospective mayoral candidates to commit to a ten-point plan to eliminate corruption in local government. The three – councillors Anna Rothery, Ann O’Byrne and Wendy Simons – are competing to be Labour’s candidate for the city mayor post that became vacant after the arrest of Joe Anderson on suspicion of conspiracy to commit bribery and witness intimidation. Anderson remains on bail and has not been charged with any offence.
Carden has written to the prospective candidates directly, but tweeted news of his move:
The ten points include:
- recording any meetings between councillors and developers and ensuring officials are always in attendance
- improved transparency of elected officials’ financial interests
- limits on lobbying and the ‘revolving door’ that often sees officials moving between public office and company posts
- a new standards committee
- more severe sanctions for misconduct
How the candidates respond remains to be seen. Ballots open on Wednesday.

The evidence is the donations and sponsorship of Sir Keir Starmer himself. Thousands of pounds (that Starmer did not disclose ’til after we’d (the membership) voted in the leadership election) from likudist pro-apartheid against Palestinians multi-millionaire Trevor Chinn and also the massive endorsement of him by a highly powerful interest group called the “Trilateral Commission”.
I’d argue the corruption – in as far as it is tangible, as opposed to principally ethical – is one of “relations”, which, as every socialist and hegelian philosopher knows, is where the power to harm resides.

As a former long standing Labour Councillor, I say Carden’s points are spot-on. However, to be effective they need a proper standards regimen with legislative teeth, unlike the spavined creature we have now.

It is a really sad reflection on the state of our party that we have to ask Labour candidates to commit to an anti- corruption plan. Being a Labour candidate should mean that you believe in social justice and want to better the living conditions of the people you represent. However since the Right dominated our party it has been OK to use the Labour name to get elected then use your position to accumulate personal wealth.
Many of our MPs are rich – some are millionaires- and Blair is a multi millionaire as are at least one of his children and his wife. Kinnock and wife have milked Labour for decades I would be amazed if they aren’t multi millionaires too. How can such people even begin to understand what it is like to be really hungry, have no roof over your head, to dread opening your mail and to have literally no money until your next payday or benefit day.
I applaud Dan for the stance he has taken. He’ll get no thanks for it from Starmer and the others – upholding our traditional values and drawing attention to the revolving door and other unacceptable practices does not interest them, they want personal advancement too- but at least he’s trying.

You don’t have to be a member of the Labour Party to join the SHA, but members can get a vote when the Labour Party selects a leader, just as Trades Union members do, and we are entitled to send delegates to the Party Conference. Over the years we have played a significant part in the development of Labour Party health policies.

We should resist with all our might, becoming a nice cosy circular group of agreement. That is useless. We have our present predicament as incontrovertible evidence. The mantras “keep calm”, “work around” X, “work things out”, hide, silence, keep head down are sone of the exact attitudes and traits which allows lies to take root. How can we hide yet complain that people believe lies. Yet never inspect the lies and inconsistencies eg in Allan Howard’s first account of why he left an old man at the mercy of thugs on a pub toilet floor.
We must scrutinise. Investigate. Compare eg his first account and embarrassing later drivel when he was called out. The Shill Hunter wannabe is no such thing. Allan Howard is a fraud.
