Former Labour leader issues video supporting ‘deeply rooted’ Liverpool hopeful to be Labour’s candidate – and the first black woman to become the city’s mayor
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has blown the contest to become the party’s candidate for this year’s mayoral election, by publicly endorsing the ‘fantastic’ and ‘deeply-rooted’ Anna Rothery for the candidacy:
Rothery’s grassroots campaign has inspired widespread support, despite the far better-resourced and funded campaign of former deputy mayor Ann O’Byrne.
O’Byrne, who supported Yvette Cooper in the 2015 leadership election, failed last week to answer questions about her involvement in the opaque cash car-parking business Beautiful Ideas Company. Former mayor Joe Anderson stepped down from the position when he was arrested over allegations of bribery and intimidation. Another local councillor, Wendy Simon, is also standing.
Voting in the contest on 17 February.

I think Corbyn and Squawkbox have won it for Rothery.Just the mention of “cooperwoman “is the kiss of death.for most Labour supporters,just look what a Balls up they made of the leadership ambitions.Seems fitting that Jeremy Corbyn should deliver the blow to a cooper supporting ballsup campaign.of OByrne.
I think US style city mayors are a pointless extra layer of government – but I wish her success obviously if the alternative is a right wing mayor.
More mayors than a stud farm ffs. Get shut of the position that was never required nor wanted anyway.
