The Northern Irish government is showing the Tories – and Keir Starmer – the way to attack the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
The UK government has not included school closures even in the most serious ‘Tier 3‘ of its new system and while the Labour leader has now called for a nationwide lockdown he still wants to keep schools open unless a lockdown happens to coincide with a school holiday.
But Stormont is to close schools for at least two weeks, alongside pubs and restaurants for a month, in response to the massive increase in infections in Northern Ireland.
The UK government’s own SAGE scientists say that schools are driving up the rate of infection and even the deputy Chief Medical Officer said the Tories’ measures are inadequate to bring the spread of the virus down.

Some of my workmates are distraught about the pubs being shut for 4 weeks. Having to sit in the house with the wife, girlfriend or both is going to push them over the edge. All joking aside though it’s getting scary over here folks.
In my twenties and thirties I drank quite a lot (a lot for a Glaswegian, a light lunch for an Irishman I expect 😉 ) because pubs & clubs were where the wild girls were and it was a good idea to build up a tolerance for booze.
I was lucky I could always take it or leave it though, so “distraught” doesn’t compute.
Seems to me that if going dry is a problem – then it’s a problem.
