UK lost more people to coronavirus in 24hrs than Italy, Spain, Russia, China, Turkey, Iran and Canada combined

In a measure of the shame of the Tory government’s reckless mishandling of the coronavirus crisis, the UK saw 627 of its people die from the virus in the 24 hours to Tuesday lunchtime – in the official figures. The real toll is estimated to be twice that number or higher.

On the same day, Italy, Spain, Russia, China, Turkey, Iran and Canada lost 625 people.

In total.

The UK had weeks more to prepare than most of these nations. In spite of this scandal, the political class in this country is uniting to push for the lifting of the lock-down.

The virus disproportionately kills poor people and people from ethnic minorities – and is killing them by the tens of thousands. Those who most need advocates to fight for them have essentially been abandoned – consigned to a form of social and ethnic cleansing with few speaking up on their behalf.

  1. ” The virus disproportionately kills poor people and people from ethnic minorities – and is killing them by the tens of thousands. In the real world now. Those who most need advocates to fight for them have been abandoned by the Tories. That is what Tories do. That is what we expect. To me the greatest sadness is to get more confirmation that they have also been abandoned by those of us frantically arguing defending theories as if a theory deserves more passion than saving one life or even over six hundred in one hour.

Sad deadly diversion. Confused misdirected rage. Rage utterly irrelevant to thousands. Collective irrelevance. Collective poverty of sequencing. Religious zeal. Choice irrelevant fervour over how we should get to a destination .

    1. To abandon an individual or a group of people implies that those doing the abandoning once supported those they are now abandoning, but THAT was never the case as far as the Tories are concerned.

And just who exactly are you referring to when you say “that they have also been abandoned by those of us frantically arguing defending theories…..”, and what was the further “confirmation” you refer to? And What theories?

      Could you elaborate?

    2. And could you elaborate about the ‘Sad deadly diversion’, and also the ‘Confused misdirected rage’. What sad deadly diversion? What confused misdirected rage?

      Many thanks.

      1. Signpost? Are you there? Anyway, in the meantime, do any of the three people who ‘Liked’ his comment (at the time of writing) know what he is talking about? Or anyone else for that matter. Cheers

  2. For the attention of Steve H: Steve, what was it about the passage you quoted from the Paul Waugh article (in the Huffpost) that you thought would be of interest to me and which you said had been largely over-looked? Cheers

  3. I am fascinated by this Skwawkbox tendency to wish death, fear and economic destruction on the populace instead of taking a critical stance re. the media narrative.

… and after all that’s been learned in the last year

    The actuality :

The UK has a high relative death toll from this mild virus (probably – death registrations from deaths actually caused by the virus are actually unknown, and data from most countries is pretty questionable). But even in this country there is a lower death toll than in most epidemic ‘flu seasons of note.

The major impact has been the effects on the older population – particularly in care homes, which is really concerning – as it is in many other countries. For the majority of the healthy, younger and middle-aged population, this is a *mild* virus – not a spectacularly deadly one.

As real data has gradually accumulated, the ‘horror story scenario’ peddled by Ferguson and his notably inaccurate (look at the history) modelling team has been comprehensively blown out of the water.

A major concern about mortality is the deadly effects of an ill-considered lockdown – and the suicidal effect of extending it. The lockdown is quite probably *responsible* for a proportion of the deaths in care homes, which were given scant consideration in developing this ill-focused policy.

The all-cause death rate (the only reasonably reliable measure) is now falling, and has been from the miiddle of April – much as it would with any other infectious disease. Deaths in hospital attributed to the virus started falling earlier. Skwawkbox actually seems unwittingly to want to attribute this good news to government policy rather than the fact of the simple nature of things – such is the logic of wishing an extension of lockdown rather than evidence-based, focused measures. Analysis by the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker (OxCGRT) shows no relationship between severity of lockdown and death rates between countries.

Of course – the problem, even if lockdown was shown to work, is that you need a plan for marching the troops back down the hill if you don’t want to have even more dire consequences from a tanked economy and other facors – such as lowered immunity that may result.

I’m afraid I trust the government/establishment policy and narrative rather less than Skawkbox appears to

  4. ”I’m afraid I trust the government/establishment policy and narrative rather less than Skawkbox appears to”

Says the gobshite who – earlier in the same statement – includes contradictory, establishment/government approved gobbledegook such as:

”The UK has a high relative death toll from this mild virus (probably – death registrations from deaths actually caused by the virus are actually unknown, and data from most countries is pretty questionable). But even in this country there is a lower death toll than in most epidemic ‘flu seasons of note.”

That’s NOT mirroring the government/establishment narrative in ANY WAY, is it, dicky?

Knob. It’s the exact same line as the ‘No causal effect’ the DWP trots out whenever challenged on deaths from sanctions/being found fit for work etc.

The same with the ‘look at the figures from ‘country x’ , they don’t tally up in the same way ours do. (Nor do ours when they change the criteria every fucking five minutes)

As for this ‘MILD virus’ , have you been loaned out to trump’s or bolsanaro’s gang of clowns?

And your ‘Relative high death toll’ ISN’T obfuscatory?

    Just go away.

  5. Listen to your local Tory, who will tell you now is not the time to argue over figures or apportion blame. This is EXACTLY the time to do this, while people are dying. Why wait for a year until it’s all over, when miraculously it will be “Now is not the time, we have to reconstruct the country and get ready to receive the chlorinated chicken!”

  6. Is it any wonder that Rees-Mogg is desperate to get the Tory’s braying hordes back in parliament for PMQs. Johnson really hates the scrutiny he’s currently been subjected to.

“Was the government’s advice on coronavirus in care homes, in place up until March 12th, wrong? Starmer asked, before quoting: “It remains very unlikely that people receiving care in a care home will become infected.” This opening salvo from the Labour leader saw Johnson contradict his own government’s advice, declaring that “it wasn’t true the advice said that”. The trouble for the PM is that a trip to the government’s own website quickly proves him wrong.

The Labour leader then explained that the ONS had reported 18,000 additional deaths in care homes in April, yet only 8,000 are recorded by the government as Covid-19 deaths. “That leaves 10,000 additional and unexplained care home deaths.” How does the government explain these? Refusing to, the PM said that the “ONS is responsible for producing the data that they have”, but that the government has also produced data that shows an “appreciable and substantial reduction” in the number of deaths. This led Starmer to ask how can the PM fix the problem in care homes, which his government has repeatedly pledged to do, if “the numbers are not understood”?

Starmer then turned to the comparison with other countries. Why did yesterday’s coronavirus press conference not feature the usual slide showing the UK’s progress against that of other countries? The Labour leader asked. Could it be because we have now taken the “unenviable” position of having the most deaths in Europe? This led the Prime Minister to paradoxically suggest that it is “premature” for the leader of the opposition to draw international comparisons. “I’m baffled,” Starmer answered. “It’s not me seeking to draw the comparisons – these are the government’s slides that have been used for seven weeks to reassure the public.”

    1. Hi Steve, did you see my post up the page addressed to you? It’s not urgent, and I know you’re always busy on here, but when you have the time I’d really appreciate it if you could explain. Thanks

  7. Sequence of events is criminal
To order hospitals to clear beds and send elderly into care homes without testing and support in those homes to make way for CV19 cases
Equal and opposite charge is care homes told not to send elderly to hospital for treatment where they had underlying conditions to protect hospital beds for CV19 patients
There are 1000,a of spare beds that could have been used to prolong life and treat other life threatening conditions
The death toll from lockdown are now coming through in the statistics, there are large unexplained excess deaths showing up in figures
Keir did something worthwhile today, Uncle Festa always resorts to outright lying and bullshit when cornered because he is never held to account, let’s see what happens from letter sent by our leader to shitehawk Johnson
Said it before sit down with Speaker and Uncle Festa and threaten to call him out in the chamber if he continues to mislead the House, sounds mad but they will go to the far end of a fart to protect their traditions

  8. To quote deaths 2 days in is creating a false image that there is a new wave. These poor souls have probably been struggling for life more than a week or so if not longer
It’s coming to light that the vast majority of deaths come from the 75% of 65+ age range who had the New to UK in 2018, quadrivalent Flu jab. I had it myself and suffered a severe reaction and no doubt I would react adversely to a component of this lab escapee. This reaction is called a Cytokine Storm but can be controlled before it overwhelms the body and kills people. Many good Doctors and Virologists are being silenced by being banned from Major Platforms because Big PHARMA who are the villains in all of this would be put out of business
    MEANWHILE PEOPLE DIE
If you are not part of the solution to calming the panic by research and presenting FACTS then like the MSM you become part of the problem WAKE UP
