Tory front-bencher’s comments on LBC insulted ‘common sense’ of Grenfell victims. Apology denies plain ‘commons sense’ of the words
Senior Tory Jacob Rees-Mogg has apologised for his comments claiming Grenfell victims lacked ‘common sense’ for not leaving their flats when they were told to remain by the Fire Brigade, who were following what was standard procedure at that time.
But his apology has provoked even further outrage – and outright disbelief – for its claim that he meant the opposite of what he said:
What I meant to say is that I would have also listened to the fire brigade’s advice to stay and wait at the time. However, with what we know now and with hindsight I wouldn’t and I don’t think anyone else would. I would hate to upset the people of Grenfell if I was unclear in my comments.
Here is what Rees-Mogg said in the LBC interview:

Jacob Rees-Mogg’s ‘apology’ did not accept that he spoke arrogantly and offensively about the victims of the Grenfell blaze – a disaster overseen by a Tory council. Instead, he has simply claimed that he meant the opposite of what he said.
Tories blamed villagers for Aberfan. They blamed miners for Orgreave. They blamed fans for Hillsborough.
And now they have blamed victims for the Grenfell death toll.
Weasel words do nothing to hide the shamelessnes and utter scandal of it.

This was after they interviewed a Grenfell survivor who lost loved ones saying quite clearly and succinctly he felt insulted.
