Video: Rees-Mogg adds insult to injury with #Grenfell apology claiming he meant opposite of offensive words

Tory front-bencher’s comments on LBC insulted ‘common sense’ of Grenfell victims. Apology denies plain ‘commons sense’ of the words

Senior Tory Jacob Rees-Mogg has apologised for his comments claiming Grenfell victims lacked ‘common sense’ for not leaving their flats when they were told to remain by the Fire Brigade, who were following what was standard procedure at that time.

But his apology has provoked even further outrage – and outright disbelief – for its claim that he meant the opposite of what he said:

What I meant to say is that I would have also listened to the fire brigade’s advice to stay and wait at the time. However, with what we know now and with hindsight I wouldn’t and I don’t think anyone else would. I would hate to upset the people of Grenfell if I was unclear in my comments.

Here is what Rees-Mogg said in the LBC interview:

“What I meant to say is that I would have also listened to the fire brigade’s advice to stay and wait at the time.”

Jacob Rees-Mogg responds to enquiries only by letter. The BBC called his comments a ‘gaffe’.

SKWAWKBOX view:

Jacob Rees-Mogg’s ‘apology’ did not accept that he spoke arrogantly and offensively about the victims of the Grenfell blaze – a disaster overseen by a Tory council. Instead, he has simply claimed that he meant the opposite of what he said.

Tories blamed villagers for Aberfan. They blamed miners for Orgreave. They blamed fans for Hillsborough.

And now they have blamed victims for the Grenfell death toll.

Weasel words do nothing to hide the shamelessnes and utter scandal of it.

  1. ”The BBC called his comments a ‘gaffe’.”

In particular, one laura kuenssberg. The utter fucking coo that she is.

    1. Wikipedia has interesting info on her. Kinda makes sense how she has her job.

    2. Laura Kuenssberg should apologise for trivialising her buddy Rees Mogg’s disgusting comments. Both Tories both shameless.

  2. He told his version of the truth, and now regrets showing his contempt for the working class and immigrants for which the consevative party are renown.Cummings Will have to slap him down for his honesty, thats not really on message?

  3. If one is being charitable it looks like the start of the Tory’s GE campaign can at best be described as not going quite as well as they hoped it would.

How long will it be before vacuousness of both Boris and the Tory prospectus are exposed, just like the inadequacies of MayBot and her policies were exposed.

I can’t wait to start picking the Tory’s manifesto apart.

  4. The sooner people wake up to how cuntish these tory MPs are, the better.

  5. How confused and misled are the people of this country to elect these tories so out of touch, if not psychopaths

  6. And STILL the BBC narrative went with: rees mogg ACCUSED of insulting Grenfell families’

This was after they interviewed a Grenfell survivor who lost loved ones saying quite clearly and succinctly he felt insulted.

No ‘ACCUSATION’ about it, bbc, public schoolboy toerag apologist cnuts.
