Breaking: Labour Students finally admits it’s right-wing front as NEC votes to wind it up

Lansman motion to replace old Blairite group with new structure passed by NEC

Labour Students, the right-wing group set up in the 1980s to fight the left-wing Young Socialists is to be ‘wound up’ after Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) voted today to support Jon Lansman’s motion to replace it with a new organisation.

Labour Students has been heavily criticised for its lack of transparency and democracy, forcing the NEC to take action previously to prevent it skewing the election of the NEC member representing Labour’s youth and claiming a mandate to speak for them – and NEC members said today that the group had voided its affiliation by failing to pay the required subscriptions.

Labour Students denied that it had not paid its dues, but inadvertently admitted what the left has long contested – that it is a front for right-wing Labour influence – by complaining that the NEC’s decision was an attack on ‘centrists’.

SKWAWKBOX view:

The Labour Party just got healthier for its young members, thanks to the NEC.

  1. Please can we now, NEC , have the same winding up applied to the JLM and LOFI and its ” affiliation” to Labour …. over to you Lansman !

    1. Opps sorry I in my haste I didn’t read the above comments already on this theme ,, great minds etc etc .
PS can we have JVL affiliated instead please NEC pretty please with sprinkles on top even …

      1. Rob affiliations are continually used by the majority of those organisations to influence and undermine democracy in the Labour party ,and some like IF I run a cash for questions racket inside the PLP.The affiliates have encouraged the PLP to operate outside of the leadership’s and the partys manifesto. No more affiliated Labour.Just the democratic socialist Labour party…I am a Irish nationalist by culture and instinct, but my loyalty is to the socialist Labour party and the membership not outside politicised organisations…its just too riskey!

  2. The JLM needs to go next! A Blairite organisation infested with operatives who collude with the Israeli Embassy as exposed by Al Jazeera and has links with the racist Israeli Labour Party and the racist World Zionist Organisation. #ExpeTheJLM

  3. Great 👍 News nobling elections and all the tricks they are guilty of done ✔ One foul swoop by the NEC.Begs the question what about the other rats tearing our party apart?…Also how ironic coming from Lansman the democratic fiefdom owner of momentum. And what about Chris Williamson and lansmans input in the lies on AS….his day will come sooner than later and momentum will finally be democratized and free to support true socialism not Zionists nationalism!

    1. This is a great move, but the fact that Lansman appears to be behind it make me suspicious. He doesn’t do anything without a motive.

We’ll have to watch, wait and see.

      1. I find it to be very odd. History has made me an old curmudgeon when something like this is backed by a certain group not noted for their loyalty. Empire builders do what they have to. Cheers

      2. Yes. I’m waiting to hear that labour youth will in future be represented by Zionist Youth for Labour, prop. J. Lansman, membership: 1

  4. I’m not sure if I’ve posted this on skwawkbox before, but this is what Jon Lansman said on the 1st of March 2017, as related in the following extract from an article in the Guardian:

Asked by an activist at the meeting in Richmond, south-west London, on 1 March about what role people suspended or expelled from Labour could play in Momentum in future, Lansman stated: “I see no reason why they should not carry on. On the basis that most people who have been expelled have been expelled unfairly, – the [Labour party] compliance unit has been trying to kick them out – there is no one in Momentum who wishes to exclude people.”

    (Ends)

The compliance unit consists of the Complaints Department and the Disputes Team, the latter of which about half-a-dozen (former) staff members participated in the Panorama hatchet job, and just like their buddies at the JLM who appeared on the program posing as ordinary Jewish LP members, they were of course lying through their nasty little fascist teeth.

Footnote: Just to be clear, SEVEN of the ten people presented on the program as ordinary Jewish Labour Party members are executive committee members of the JLM, and ONE of the other three was until relatively recently (prior to the Panorama program) the JLM’s Campaign Officer. And no doubt the OTHER two were chums of theirs!

    1. And just in case you haven’t seen it before (I’ve posted it several times in the past couple of months since the Panorama program), the following article contains a list of all the JLM executive committee members and the positions they hold (or in one case, held) who appeared in the program posing as ordinary Jewish LP members, all of whom were unnamed, except for one:

      1. Apologies, but I just came the following article on the World Socialist Web Site, posted on the 14th of September:

British judge jails Assange indefinitely, despite end of prison sentence

In a hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning, British District Judge Vanessa Baraitser ruled that WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange will remain in prison, despite the fact that his custodial sentence for “absconding” bail expires on September 22.

      2. Allan Howard – I thought you may find this interesting.

        Interview with Edward Snowden
‘If I Happen to Fall out of a Window, You Can Be Sure I Was Pushed’

In a DER SPIEGEL interview, whistleblower Edward Snowden talks about how he managed to mislead the most powerful intelligence agency in the world, about his life in Russia and about why the internet must be reinvented.

      3. Allan thanks for drawing attention to the forgotten martyr to truth and journalism…With brexit Johnson,so called moderates and the conferance we have all forgotten about Julian assange Maybe we can lobby mps and Squawk box to shame all of the left to stop this miscarriage of justice before they send him away to the USA never to see the outside of a cell for the rest of his life..I understand that he may also face a call from prosecuters in the USA for the maximum sentance of death by leathel injection. We cannot allow this being so close to a General election and a change of government.I cannot see any Corbyn government complying to extradite Assange to be executed!

        Have you seen this?

The son of Lady Emma Arbuthnot, the Westminster chief magistrate overseeing the extradition proceedings of Julian Assange, is the vice-president and cyber-security adviser of a firm heavily invested in a company founded by GCHQ and MI5 which seeks to stop data leaks, it can be revealed.

Alexander Arbuthnot’s employer, the private equity firm Vitruvian Partners, has a multimillion-pound investment in Darktrace, a cyber-security company which is also staffed by officials recruited directly from the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

These intelligence agencies are behind the US government’s prosecution of Julian Assange for publishing secret documents. Darktrace has also had access to two former UK prime ministers and former US President Barack Obama.

The revelations raise further concerns about potential conflicts of interests and appearance of bias concerning Lady Arbuthnot and the ties of her family members to the UK and US military and intelligence establishments. Lady Arbuthnot’s husband is Lord James Arbuthnot, a former UK defence minister who has extensive links to the UK military community.

      5. Peter Oborne is one of a very few real journalists left in state and corporate media. Like Hitchens I often don’t agree with their political views but both speak out where prominent so called left writers don’t.for whatever reasons, I call it self serving cowardice or bubble dislocation from the real world.

I don’t follow Media Lens closely anymore but have you seen this article? http://www.medialens.org/index.php/alerts/alert-archive/2019/911-stockholm-syndrome-julian-assange-and-the-limits-of-guardian-dissent.html
It includes a link to Nils Melzer’s (UN Special Rapponteur on Torture) article ‘Demasking the Torture of Julian Assange’ which is a must read.

Corbyn has spoken out but the ‘left’ in general has been very weak on the atrocious treatment and torture in a UK max sec prison is receiving. Many rake up the Swedish rape non charges and use that as their excuse there never have been any charges of anything in Sweden. Easy to stay out of a major moral, free speech, journalist/publisher rights and human rights case involving British State cruelty and illegal overreach when you can bury your head, so as not to take on UK Gov. /British state eh?

Allam Howard, I applaud your persistence in reminding people of Assange’s predicament.

      6. “I cannot see any Corbyn government complying to extradite Assange to be executed!”

Joseph, the way the rogue British State including legal process is behaving and things in Belmarsh are going Assange may not survive to be extradited.

Of course one of LP most principled and brave MPs, currently disgracefully suspended from the party, Chris Williamson is on the Assange case fighting in Assange’s corner.

  5. This is one tiny part of what should be a far more radical agenda for party democracy in the Labour Party including:

    * abolition of the Blair designed stakeholders’ NEC in favour of an NEC elected exclusively by rank and file members

    * remodelling Conference as the parliament of the party which spends the vast majority of its time deciding party policy

    * reintroducing open selections (mandatory reselection) instead of the unsatisfactory trigger mechanism thereby reinforcing accountability of the out-of-control PLP and ensuring a more level playing field between sitting MPs and other party members who wish to stand in their stead.

Corbyn we are told is the only left winger to become party leader since the interwar years so it is a pity that the NEC Left under his leadership did not promote this kind of comprehensive transformation. Again, the root cause is the contemporary Left’s profound left-liberalism which brings with it the desire not actually to change society very much.

    1. The above piece links to the following comprehensive demolition of the Panorama hatchet job, and is well worth taking the time to read:

      https://www.jewishvoiceforlabour.org.uk/article/an-open-letter-about-the-labour-tribune-mps-group-statement-on-antisemitism-in-the-labour-party/

And please share as far and wide as possible (with your local MP and councillors and local synagogue, along with family and friends and neighbours and work colleagues etc, etc

    2. Good article. We have known for some time that a similar problem exists within the Liberal Democrats if you show any concern for Palestinians.

  6. Is this the one that the woeful jasmin beckett is a member of, or is it the one she called garbage (presumably for not being bliarite enough?)

The party will only be healthier for young members once that whining, conniving little problem child ‘s punted.
