Protest votes on either side of Brexit divide pose danger across Europe
A Germany-based Briton has warned that protest votes in today’s European Parliament elections could result in a hard-right politician taking the presidency of the European Commission.
Former Momentum staffer Steve Hudson’s Twitter thread this morning lays out the risk:
Weber’s politics include positions that will outrage British people across a wide spectrum. His commitment to ‘ever-closer integration’ within the EU will be an affront to Brexit supporters – yet ironically, support for Farage’s Brexit party will strengthen Weber’s prospects.
Weber also has a history of support for the racist and misogynist Hungarian PM Viktor Orban and has voted against EU measures to outlaw ‘gay conversion therapies’. Weber’s closeness to the motor industry bodes ill for attempts to limit and reverse climate change.

If people like you and the liberal media hadn’t bullshitted the public, on blogs, comment boards, social media etc across the country, day after day for 3 years solid, there might not have been a protest vote. Most voters would likely have not bothered to vote at all, like they normally do in EU elections.
I couldn’t bring myself to vote for Farage, but I’m sure as hell not going to vote for some “centrist” scrounger standing under the guise of Labour. There are no Socialists in this group of nonentities, it’s all about £8 grand a month plus expenses and pension for a non legislative body.

Perhaps you could explain why your abstention is any different from pre-Corbyn Labour MPs abstaining on legislation affecting Welfare.

My second home is in the Caribbean so is unlikely to be affected much by the availability of flights to the EU from the UK. However my friends and neighbours out there are very concerned about the impact that the UK leaving the EU will have on their exports to the EU.

by David Kogan’ and I often witness her friends and her having passionate discussions about current politics.
On the cusp of the massive redundancies that you (for the first time I think) allude to, middle class WORKERS – for workers they are – will for the first time be as vulnerable as the unskilled, and probably more so.

I’m guessing they wanted to present a wide range of candidates in order to appeal to as large a demographic as possible (ie: win elections). Limiting the candidates to those approved by ‘The Tooting Popular Front’ would have been counter productive.

You seem to be a little confused, Could you please explain how your ‘cunning Baldrick’ plan to give Farage’s mob a free ride will save money. To me it seems counter intuitive because the UK will still be paying for their MEPs regardless of who it is. You’ll have given your voice to the fascists who are ‘helpfully’ going to piss off our major trading partner as much as they can. Never mind , I suppose we can always fall back on our deal with the Faroe Islands

Stop Brexit, transform Britain
The real division in society is not between those who voted Leave and Remain, but between the many and the few. Brexit is poisoning politics and stopping us from addressing the issues that matter to people. We need a general election to deliver a radical Labour government.
If the UK leaves the EU, Brexit does not end. Instead, we face years of negotiations and trade deals that deregulate our economy in the interests of the few, making it much harder to deliver our radical manifesto.
Brexit is a Tory project, and Labour opposes it. It would mean a victory for the nationalist right, and is a threat to our rights, jobs, NHS, public services and the fight against climate change.
We will answer insecurity and exploitation with hope and solidarity to bring the country together. We will rebuild communities with investment, expand common ownership, boost wages and union rights, and challenge the narratives of the nationalist right. Free movement is a workers’ right which we will defend.
The Leave vote is more than three years old, and there is no clear democratic mandate for any Brexit settlement. The democratic imperative now is for the people to have the final say. Labour will back Remain in that public vote.
Labour is an internationalist party, with a duty to challenge the far right. We will campaign for a Europe-wide Green New Deal, levelling up of wages, democratising European institutions, ending Fortress Europe, and an international strategy to tax the rich and corporations.

This may not be good news, we will probably end up with Boris as PM who will be even worse and we will still have Brexit to cope with. It will also increase Tory support.
Certainly not ‘good’ news – except for the Tories’. A last gasp attempt to recover ground.
Incredible as it would be in a sane (non-Brexit) universe, it is possible that Porkies Johnson will actually get a look-in – although there will be pretty solid parliamentary opposition.
After the resurrection of Dracula of the Snake Oil in the European elections, there is clearly enough shared stupidity around to threaten any scenario.
I guess to be fair we should gratefully acknowledge that she was stunningly successful at being one of the Labour Party’s best election assets.
It’s a shame she couldn’t continue to help us out by clinging on for a bit longer
I’m afraid this is a victory for the far right, not the Labour Party.
If May really did have the Country’s best interests at heart, even though she is going she could have said that she now believes that putting the Brexit decision back to the people is the best way to go. This would also put the boot into the far right who have just done the same to her.
Okay but I would advise against the use of statements like:
“and there is no room for ‘self-indulgent gesture politics’ or narrow obsessions.”
It looks like it could have been written by Neil Kinnock!
