Behaviour of campaign for so-called “people’s vote” seems to suggest they’re not that keen on actually having one
The so-called “People’s Vote” (PV) campaign for a further EU referendum has a curious record – of not wanting a new referendum, whenever it looks like the rubber might actually hit the road and put one up for an actual debate and vote in Parliament.
‘Tinge’ group MP Sarah Wollaston tabled an amendment to today’s motion for Brexit to be delayed in order to create time for a new referendum – and it was accepted onto the agenda by Speaker John Bercow.
But former Blair spin doctor and PV mouthpiece Alastair Campbell quickly poured cold water on the idea, claiming it was not ‘wrong to press’ for a PV:
This is not the first time such nonsense has taken place. At the end of January, Jeremy Corbyn personally tabled an amendment to put a Commons debate and vote on a new referendum firmly on the parliamentary agenda.
It was defeated – because supposedly pro-PV MPs, including Tinge-groupers who later left their parties claiming they were driven by a desire to stop Brexit, voted against Corbyn’s amendment.
Some of those same MPs have this week attacked Corbyn for not giving enough support to a new referendum – but at the moment he’s the only parliamentary figure who has actually tried to put one up for debate and possible action.

Seems it’s never quite the right time to actually go for a PV – but it’s always the right time to attack Corbyn for not being supportive enough of one.
This centrist flip-flopping – making huge noise about a so-called PV but then blocking one every time it starts to look like it might actually be discussed – has a few possible interpretations. None of them say anything positive about the centrists in question.
Either they know there is no significant support among MPs for one and don’t want their posturing to be exposed – or they’re not actually that bothered about the issue, but find it a handy cudgel to try to use against Jeremy Corbyn.
Or both, of course. There’s always the possibility of both and they’re by no means mutually exclusive.

Stop equating the idea of another referendum with being simply anti-Corbyn. It’s knee-jerk bollocks and would actually be a sign of democratic change towards the grass roots – which is what Corbyn was about.
No – it’s not where we should be, but is the only rational way out of the current Brexit nonsense and the pretense that it was other than a non-result that’s past it’s a sell-by date.
What’s to fear – except a better informed/more representative (hopefully) electorate – and the right wing plutocrat fakers encouraging people to throw rattles out of the pram?
Oh yes, let’s put us stupid workers back in our box, after all, the fact that 64% of working class voters wanted to leave the rotten neo-liberal EU doesn’t count does it, as the liberals and Blaitrites now what is really good for us – staying in the EU and continuing to have a situation where a socialist economic policy is illegal under the EU rules, where privatisation must be enforced, and where the Thatcher supported Single Market that undermines collective organisation and drives down wages is protected.

The actuality is that a majority of Labour voters (i.e the aware and ungulled) in all groups – including by definitions of class – voted to Remain.

When JC put forward a second referendum amendment it was as part of a composite amendment. JC has never sponsored a 2nd referendum as a stand alone amendment.

Anything other than leaving with “no deal” means continuing with constitutionally enshrined neoliberalism in perpetuity.
No possibility of replacing of capitalism with democratic socialism. No possibility of a radical extension of public ownership to shift wealth and power to working people. No possibility of using state aids to give British industry a helping hand in markets through an interventionist programme if so doing distorts the single market. No possibility of replacing marketised economic sectors with public monopolies. 1945 style nationalisation of entire economic sectors would remain wholly illegal as it outrageously is today.
For all the project fear tosh this ulterior motive is the real reason why the May-TIGgger-Blairite-Corbynista grand coalition wants to crush “no deal”.

The People’s Vote know the amendment is not going to be passed. Their goose has been well and truly cooked!
Or, to put it another way, there’s a majority in parliament that supports putting the head under the blanket and hoping Mummy can sort out this mess rather than your esteemed collective representatives having to grow a pair and lead.
The only People’s Vote that matters is a General Election. You’ve got to be in power first. What we have seen throughout this mess is that Jeremy has been spot on with his strategy. Now is the time for Labour MP’s who’ve been undermining the party to grow a pair, swallow their pride and back the leader of the biggest political party in Western Europe to bring about the radical change this country needs. Time for the grownups to take charge and for Theresa to resign!
