‘Tear down homeless tents’ Tory councillor suspended

On Friday, the SKWAWKBOX reported the case of Tory councillor Kathryn Kelloway, who posed a picture of herself in front of the tents of homeless people in Cardiff city centre – with a call to ‘tear down these tents’.

On Friday evening, the press officer for the Tory group on Cardiff council announced that Cllr Kelloway had been suspended:

SKWAWKBOX comment:

Suspending a councillor whose comments against the victims of Tory policies does not change those policies or remove the stain of inhumanity from the Tory party.

Far too little, far too late. Only a change of government will allow the suffering inflicted to be ended and, where possible, undone.

And we’ve seen on more than one occasion that Tory suspensions are quickly undone when a councillor or MP‘s vote is needed.

Cllr Kelloway has still not responded to a request for comment.

  1. Namaste Skwawkbox,

In a published article ITV News presented figures generated by Crisis indicating homelessness in Wales had risen between 2012 and 2017 by 63% (in England by 120%) (1) No doubt Cllr Kelloway would have known this before making her scurvy comment.

Indeed, every intervention team active in Wales has said it has seen an increase in contacts with those homeless ranging from 24% to 77%. It is a dire state of affairs.

    Namaste,

    DN

  2. She represents the ward of Cyncoed, which has been solidly Lib Dem for as long as I can remember. Her father was a Lib Dem councillor there for 30 years, stepping down in 2017. She stood as a Conservative in the ward for the first time in the same election. How many people voted for her, either thinking they were still voting for her Dad, that she too was a Lib Dem, or that she must be a decent sort because of who her Dad was. They have been disabused of this now!

  3. They probably secretly agreed with her, but coming up to an election they are trying to rid themselves of their reputation for conscious cruelty.

A leopard doesn’t change its spots.

  4. She’ll be back claiming expenses like nothing ever happened by the middle of next week.
