May’s latest desperation ploy to get her EU deal approved: pass a version the EU has NOT agreed

Theresa May’s desperation to get her Brexit agreement through Parliament appears to have deprived her of any ability to think beyond that short-term goal.

According to the BBC this morning, May is now considering removing the Northern Ireland ‘backstop’ – the arrangement to prevent a ‘hard border’ between Ireland and Northern Ireland from the deal altogether.

This, she thinks, might bring enough of her back-bench opponents onside to win a parliamentary vote.

Of course, the minor problem with this is that winning the parliamentary vote would be nothing more than PR, as it will then not be the deal agreed with the EU – and the EU will not sacrifice the backstop because of its importance to the Irish government and to the Good Friday Agreement.

SKWAWKBOX comment:

If May is hoping to use the passage of a non-deal as leverage to force the EU to accept and ratify it as a deal after the fact, she has lost touch with reality.

It seems there is no limit to May’s delusion, incompetence and desperation.

  1. The only purpose for such a step is to then go to the country with a general election, blaming the EU for the failure to agree and do a no deal Brexit, thereby pleasing her supporters in the country and sowing mischief amongst her enemies(she thinks)

  2. The mind boggles . Despite having been in this country for near to 37 years I have never seen a PM who was so unaware pigheaded like her. She is a risk to all of us. Why is that woman still in a position of power?

    • Good question. The answer is related to the growing deluded backwardness of the country in relation to the world – as evidenced in the whole soggy mess of Brexit.

      • Yes ,perhaps we should listen to your friend Chuka Umunna writing in today’s Independent.

  3. “A version the EU has not agreed” ..

Isn’t that the whole point of Brexit? So that we don’t have to be beholden to the EU anymore.
