“Tori tori sauce”: Nando’s humiliates latest Con attempt to ‘get with the kids’

The Tory party’s latest attempt to bring young people on board was always doomed to fail. A discount card for Nando’s restaurant chain as compensation for huge tuition fees, a collapsing NHS, ever more unaffordable housing and policies like barring the under-25s from housing benefit – even if the subject of a screeching u-turn because of Labour pressure – was never going to fool anyone.

But the Tories might have hoped that they’d avoid being ‘owned’ on social media by the restaurant group itself. It turned out to be a futile hope.

Asked by a Twitter user whether the reports were true, Nandos was quick to respond:

But when asked by the Daily Mirror about the claim, the chain was even more emphatic – ‘brutally’ so:

We have no political affiliations. There is and will not be a political discount card.

The 20% discount for NHS staff is icing on the cake – or spice on the chicken.

The response triggered much hilarity on social media at the Tories’ expense (again), of which these are a few favourites so far:

But others pointed out the serious side of what the Tories’ damp squib idea said about their attitude to – and remoteness from – young people, albeit still with a humorous touch:

Comment:

The Tories can throw money at social media and other attempts to interest young people in their bankrupt politics and ideology, but they just can’t help being Tories…

  1. I’ll bet HMRC will be closely inspecting Nando’s tax returns from now on…

  2. Nando’s could start a new product line, strong and stable chicken with spicy hot air sauce, I am sure that would be a hit!!!

    Neither can Labour First/Progress apparently.
Tories without even the balls to own up to it are deluded to think they’ll survive the scrutiny of social media indefinitely.
Not seeing that shows they lack foresight too.
