As predicted on the SKWAWKBOX a couple of weeks ago, former Shadow Health Secretary Heidi Alexander has quit and will be joining London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s office as Deputy Mayor for Transport:
Ms Alexander’s recent career as an MP will be remembered for her resignation as part of the 2016 ‘chicken coup’ and for her ‘support’ – tepid at best, including a refusal to accept a badge from a doctors’ committee member and demanding that John McDonnell stay away from striking doctors – for the ‘junior’ doctors’ strike at a time when Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell were participating in protests to protect pay and conditions for hard-pressed medics.
As Shadow Health, she employed a lobbyist for private health companies.
Dr Yannis Gourtsoyannis, the medic who tried to hand Ms Alexander the badge, had this to say on Facebook about her departure:
Her local party now has an opportunity to select a candidate more aligned with Labour’s direction under its leadership. With the right in Lewisham well organised, it is expected to be a tough contest.
