Labour’s next General Secretary will be a woman – and one from the ‘broad left’ of the party – after Unite’s Jennie Formby and former NUT head Christine Blower reached the Labour NEC (National Executive Committee) shortlist for the position.
Ms Formby is believed to have enough solid support among NEC members to win, but Ms Blower may be hoping that her lack of history – the NUT (now National Education Union) is not affiliated to the Labour Party and she herself only recently joined the party – will play in her favour rather than being a disadvantage.
Remaining right-wing members of the NEC have no natural destination for their vote, but with the GMB behind Ms Formby as well as Unite, other union representatives and most of the party member representatives, Jennie Formby remains in pole position.
The final decision will be made at the next full NEC meeting next week.
