May misleads Commons on Welsh NHS – incompetence or dishonesty?

Theresa May, cornered during today’s PMQs by Jeremy Corbyn over the Tories’ NHS catastrophe, chose her usual, invalid escape route of pointing fingers at the NHS in Wales, where Labour is ‘in charge’.

This is true as far as it goes, but ignores the fact that the Welsh government has to deal with the Tories’ decisions on overall Welsh funding – and that despite Tory cuts, the Welsh NHS has received far higher funding increases than its English counterpart.

But May also misled Parliament over A&E waiting times in the two countries, telling MPS:

If [Corbyn] wants to talk about figures and about targets being missed, yes, the latest figures show that in England 497 people were waiting more than 12 hours.

But the latest figures also show that under the Labour government in Wales, 3,741 people were waiting more than 12 hours.

But the health services in the two countries measure two completely different things, so May’s comparison was meaningless.

The English NHS only measures numbers of patients waiting more than twelve hours in A&E between the time a decision is made to admit them and the time they’re actually admitted.

But the Welsh NHS takes into account the total time the patient waits – from their arrival in A&E.

And – self-evidently – more patients wait longer measured from their arrival than they do from the decision to admit, which may take place after they’ve already waited hours after arriving.

Comment:

Theresa May used a false and entirely meaningless comparison in PMQs to point fingers and try to wriggle out of the Tories’ guilt over an NHS crisis that, as Jeremy Corbyn told her, has already killed or significantly harmed as many as eighty people – just because of excessive ambulance waits.

If she used it in ignorance, she displayed her incompetence – again. If she used it deliberately, she displayed her dishonesty – again.

In either case, she displayed her fundamental untrustworthiness and unfitness for her position.

  1. Whilst I live in Wales, I cannot debate the figures by May but can only reiterate that there are millions of voters who now wholly mistrust her for deceit and manipulation of the truth on many occasions. About time her gutless and spineless govt stood up and forced the move by backbenches to get her replaced. She is definitely no good and has too much deceit even to her own people. She will never learn even after being advised by HER selected advisers to go for a repeat election which she screwed up. Story of her life!!

  2. She would not know what integrety and truth telling are if they hit her on her conker.
Vote of no cofident springs to mind.

  3. No matter what May says, the public can see the calamity which has befallen the NHS since the Tories took over and Jon Ashworth should repeatedly emphasise it is being done deliberately so that it can be privatised.

When questioning May, JC should ask her who she thinks she is kidding? and tell her that the public are watching her pathetic performance and are not being taken in by it.

  4. MAY IS NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE!
OVER AND OVER AGAIN, HER LIES AND BULLSHIT DO NOTHING TO MAKE ANYONE WITH AN OUNCE OF INTELLIGENCE BELIEVE ANYTHING THAT COMES OUT OF HER TWISTED MOUTH!
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN SHE TELLS LIES?
SHE OPENS HER MOUTH AND SPEAKS!

  5. By TreasonMay being at davos she only confirms what she is about – not representing the british taxpaying public rather getting permissions from her fascist partners to plunder further – davos is no more than a fascist gathering of elites totally unaccountable to the populations of the planet – who told her she could attend? the british public didn’t!!

  6. Somebody should tell May to start addressing the problems of the NHS. She should stop her boring routine of avoiding the issue by referring to the NHS in Wales as her ‘get out of jail card’ and excuse to continue to do nothing.
Whilst this so called ‘caring person’ continues to churn out the same old statistical lies, served to her by her party script writers, the NHS will never be restored to the level of service it once exemplified.
Their policy is ‘AVOID THE ISSUE, CREATE A SMOKESCREEN , LET THE NHS FAIL SO THAT A NEW, PRIVATE INSURANCE BASED SYSTEM CAN REPLACE IT’. This is neoliberal politics which demands the reduction of the State in all its aspects. The NHS is an anathema to neoliberalism.

  7. Maybot and her crew have persistently lied about the NHS in Wales and the proof is there for all to see, the lies they tell are as bad the lies they tell about the NHS in England, the sooner there is a vote of no confidence in this rotten government and they are out of office the better.
