Left candidates smash #CAC/#NCC nominations – but job’s only half done

The final results of CLP (constituency Labour party) nominations for positions on two vital committees are in – and look fantastically promising for the Left.

CAC

The Conference Arrangements Committee is perhaps the least inspiring-sounding committee the Labour Party has, but it’s crucial – as its name suggests, it controls arrangements for the party’s annual Conference, where vital policy- and rule-changes are decided. In the wrong hands, it can be deeply damaging.

The Left ‘slate’ candidates Seema Chandwani and Billy Hayes beat Labour First’s preferred candidates by more than four to one in CLP nominations.

However, the job is only half done. The CAC members are elected by ‘one member one vote’ ballot and papers are due to be issued around 21 July. Nominations will not decide who wins – if Labour’s left-wing members don’t vote, the candidates we need won’t win.

Watch out for your papers arriving and make sure you vote promptly, to ensure your vote is in well before the deadline.

NCC

The National Constitutional Committee oversees disciplinary proceedings against members. As we saw in the rash of ‘purge’ suspensions, expulsions and disciplinaries, in the wrong hands it can contribute to enormous damage.

The NCC positions will be decided by CLP delegates at this year’s Conference in Brighton. Make sure that your CLP includes this matter on its agenda before Conference in late September – and that you mandate your delegates to support Anna and Emine in the card vote ballot.

Such clear wins in the nominations bode well, but the job is far from over. The uneven numbers of nominations in the graphics above lend support to the reports the SKWAWKBOX has received of right-wing anti-democratic attempts to affect selections, such as telling members they can only nominate one candidate instead of the correct two, so we need to see matters through to completion.

Remember, vote Seema Chandwani and Billy Hayes for CAC when your ballot papers arrive – and mandate your delegates to vote for Anna Dyer and Emine Ibrahim for NCC.
