From finance minister to debanked – Varoufakis’s DiEM25 suffers bank attack

Left-wing former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis‘s DiEM25 (Democracy in Europe Movement 25) campaign group has been hit by the establishment’s favourite financial weapon against opponents of genocide and fascism: debanking.

Varoufakis posted the news to DiEM25’s social media this morning:

Tried and tested authoritarian weapon

Debanking has become a go-to weapon of the pro-war, pro-Israel establishment against those who dare stand up for peace, freedom and justice. The Canary was repeatedly debanked, ultimately forcing it to shut down. Jewish anti-genocide activist Tony Greenstein has also been repeatedly hit, along with an array of Palestinian-run or pro-Palestine groups.

While right-winger Nigel Farage complained of being debanked, in reality he was simply refused a certain type of account by a bank for the ultra-wealthy. But removal from the banking system should not be used against anyone, in an age where a bank account is essential in developed societies.

Debanking acts as an even shadier extension of the state sanction regimes that have been used against UN human rights rapporteur Francesca Albanese, German journalist German journalist Hüseyin Dogru, International Criminal Court judges and lawyers and others who inconvenience Israel’s narratives and threaten to bring its war criminals to justice.
