Greens take by-election seats in Cardiff, Newcastle, as Labour vote collapses again

The Greens have taken seats from Keir Starmer’s Labour in by-elections in Wales and the north-east of England as Labour’s vote again collapsed.

In last night’s Cardiff Council by-election, Labour bombed by twenty-five points:

🟩Green 24% (+6%)
🟥Labour 23% (-25%)

And the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Council by-election saw an identical collapse and even stronger Green gains leading to a humiliating trouncing:

🟩 Green 36% (+15%)
🟥 Labour 17% (-25%)

Even though it’s hard to imagine Starmer being even less likeable, his popularity reached an all-time low this week and his party’s is just as dire, not just in polling but at the ballot box.

  1. It will be interesting to read the excuses from the resident.

    Nah, I’m kiddin meself, aren’t I?

  2. “Even though it’s hard to imagine Starmer being even less likeable, his popularity reached an all-time low this week and his party’s is just as dire, not just in polling but at the ballot box.”

An observation which implies the question as to how the ‘Labour’ Party in Government will address that problem.

Given the form of the carpetbaggers in charge, the options appear limited.

Changing course back towards the Reality Based Community would be seriously frowned upon – probably in a lethal sense – by those who have put them where they are and who are bankrolling them to serve their narrow interests. This can certainly be ruled out.

One option which occurs is to consider methods to impact the outcome of elections by looking at ways and means of targeting the eligibility of blocs/demographics of voters likely to vote against them. One available tool which springs to mind is to extend the bar on voting for those in prison to include those either convicted or even arrested and charged for certain offences who are not sent to prison.

    Terrorism for instance.

    Just sayin’!

    1. Dave, A new player is about to enter the stage, the JC/ZS initiated new left wing democratic socialist party and we are slowly meeting up, planting seeds & starting to organise before its launch in the Autumn.
From my initial involvement & observations I see tons of passionate young people, many very tech savvy + tons of us older very experienced campaigners + tons of enthusiasm.
And many of us have read the finest socialist writers and have read in depth + have years of practice leafleting & canvassing + organising.
Years ago when JC was Labour Leader and the Right Wing media had been particularly vicious on him I thought, well today’s gonna be tough but here goes, & only 3 of us turned us to canvass.
The Right Wing Lab member quickly gave up the canvassing, I was next door & heard this person fail to defend JC.
So there were 2 of us JC supporters who engaged with citizens in this quite posh area & we engaged in political discussions about our socialist policies & people took 5 posters!
So things are going well so far and we should progress as long as we are HONEST, grassroots led, & try to politicise the masses + WE organised ourselves & Transform Society WITH citizens & not top down FOR.
Oh & recommend the brilliant New Left Review piece (May/June 2025) by Aaron Benanav ‘Beyond Capitalism’ “A multi-criterial economy would thus demand a fundamental shift in how production is organised and how economic decisions are made.”
Hope, A Real Alternative, Critical Thinking + Excitement are back on the agenda!
      Solidarity!

      1. Bazza, like a number of people I know who, like myself, are on the mailing list, we are taking a wait and see position on whether this initiative remains with both feet on the ground based solidly on Class Politics rather than the right wing parasitic “sovereign individual” politics with its artificially manufactured divisive hierarchy of oppression that has infected so called-‘progressive’ circles in recent times which has done so much damage.

      2. Dave, Know what you mean but perhaps we have to politicise internally & externally.
I recently posted some ideas on a Left Wing Union WA site & on a Stand Up To Racism WA site, my ideas were ways to pull the rug from under the Far Right in their protests against migrant hotels.
Two people did not engage with my ideas but criticised some of my words.
When I said the Far Right we’re playing some white working class people on emotive issues like immigration and were attracting the “Gullible” the word was criticised & why here’s me thinking some people fell for the Zionist lies about “beheading babies.”
And I used the term “ lumpen” which was felt to “offensive to some w class people” and I felt like saying ok I’ll write to Karl Marx, New Left Left Review writers & Cuban Ministers telling them a radical liberal doesn’t like their language.
A great poster on here years ago used to say they lack a socialist analysis.

      3. It would be interesting to observe the comments to the contents of this short contribution from about twenty years ago from Michael Parenti:

  3. The Greens did great against Labour in the Cardiff Council by-election (Grangetown ward), but I think the South Jesmond by-election seat was won by an Independentcandidate, Natalie Green.

Either way, Labour in-name-only lost. YiPPEE!
