Bake sales for Gaza ‘antisemitic’ says EU official as she lobbies against sanctions on genocidal Israel

EC ‘Coordinator for combating antisemitism’ says selling cakes to raise funds for Gaza is antisemitic because they might make Israel supporters feel ‘unsafe’

Katharina von Schnurbein, the European Commission’s ‘Coordinator for combating antisemitism’ says that ‘bake sales’ to raise funds for the starving and slaughtered Palestinian people of Gaza are ‘antisemitic’ – because they might make ‘Jews’ feel unsafe. Schnurbein appears happy to present Israel supporters and Jewish people to be the same thing, which is – well, antisemitic, as well as being a staple tactic of the Israel lobby to try to present opposition to Israel’s crimes as religiously or ethnically motivated.

Schnurbein, an ardent supporter of Israel, considers that bake sales – they were worthy of a specific mention – and similar humanitarian events represent ‘ambient antisemitism’.

And, according to a leaked diplomatic cable from the EU embassy in Tel Aviv to its headquarters in Brussels, she dismissed Israel’s genocide so far of around 400,000 people and starvation of 1.8 million – the first live-streamed, and most amply evidenced, genocide in history – as merely ‘rumours’.

Schnurbein’s amplification of Israeli lies earned her a rebuke from diplomats, according to a European magazine:

Her “bake sale” briefing astonished some of the EU ambassadors around the table [said the EU source].

They had also held “internal part” talks prior their “exchange of views” with her, the readout noted, in which five of them had specifically warned “against the temptation of labelling criticism toward IL [Israeli] government as ‘antisemitism’.”

There was “growing IL messaging in this respect,” they’d said, including at a conference with Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar in Jerusalem on 27 May (which von Schnurbein had freshly attended).

And one EU ambassador later told her face-to-face: “The IL side dismisses every accusation on attacks on hospitals as ‘blood libels’ … [but] these are facts and to bring them up is not antisemitic”.

“The position of … [several EU] governments (who could not be accused of having an anti-IL bias) towards the Israeli government was hardening, also due to the growing pressure by public opinion in their countries”, said the EU diplomat who drafted the leaked cable.

Schnurbein also smeared anti-genocide protest groups, claiming falsely that “Hamas or other extremist groups were behind” them and were used by the militia group to “skilfully … shift [global] media attention”.

And she indicated where her loyalties lie, telling her audience that Europe has a:

need to build a ‘trust based’ dialogue with Israel [because] losing IL would be a loss for Europe.

Academics and human rights experts in Israel and Brussels accused Schnurbein of a:

worrying conflation of Jewish people in Europe with the state of Israel

and of:

deliberately ignor[ing] the fact that Israel’s air campaign and its leaders’ genocidal and dehumanising discourse [against Palestinians] started on 7 October. The first month of this [Israeli] air campaign was the most lethal for children in the 21st century.

[Von Schnurbein is] clearly indifferent to the suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza … she doesn’t even mention it [in the Tel Aviv discussion.

She’s hostile to any sign of solidarity with the Palestinians, calling it ‘ambient antisemitism’ – a clearly totalitarian term.

Schnurbein is also an advocate of the censorship of social media platforms to protect Israel.

  1. It will be interesting to read this ‘wholly impartial’ report when it is released later this week

The authors of a forthcoming report into antisemitism in the UK say they had been “stunned” and “alarmed” by the evidence they encountered.

Lord Mann, the government’s antisemitism adviser, and former defence secretary under the previous Conservative administration Penny Mordaunt were appointed to head a commission into antisemitism set up by the Board of Deputies.

    https://www.thejc.com/news/uk/evidence-of-uk-antisemitism-stunned-us-into-silence-say-authors-of-new-report-h4luooog 🤔

    1. “Lord Mann, the government’s antisemitism adviser, and former defence secretary under the previous Conservative administration Penny Mordaunt were appointed to head a commission into antisemitism set up by the Board of Deputies.”

      Oh my aching sides.

    2. Ah bless! A commission set up by [checks notes] a “pressure group” whose definition of “anti-semitism” amounts to anyone and everyone; anything and everything who/which is not a rabid Zionist.

In other news, the Anti-Nazi League is accused of racism against Fascists.

      1. Yes wonder what the lumpen will come up with as some argue the BOD doesn’t represent the majority of the wonderfully diverse UK Jewish community which is NOT homogenous -there is left, right, centrist, non-political, rich & poor, Zionists & Anti-Zionists.
And let us remind ourselves after the 1WW the BOD complained about the working class Jewish people coming to the UK from Eastern Europe who they saw as poorly educated.
And in the famous Battle of Cable Street the BOD told Jews to stay at home but many w class Jews, Irish & others including grassroots Communists & Labour Party members (the latter 2 against their leaderships) United won a famous victory!
And this with the support of the progressive m class is what we need today.
I remember in my city with the rest of the Left standing face to face opposing fascists (the real AS) which can be threatening as some of them were drunk, but I looked around and our critics including Right Wing Lab & Tory MPs were nowhere to be seen yet they attempt to smear us when the Left has a proud record of fighting ALL racism!
Perhaps the problem with Zionists is they believe there is only one truth and it is their perspective and if you disagree with them then you are AS which is absolutely ridiculous!
Will this report by political lightweights on behalf of political lightweights conflate & repeat this narrative?
Recommend Paul Keleman’s book ‘The British Left and Zionism: A History of Divorce.’ And Asa Winstanley’s book & both expose the AS from Right Wing Labour MPs or Lords like Hugh Gaitskill Ernest Bevin & founder of The Fabians Lord Webb etc.
Current Right Wing Forces are sounding more & more like Orwell’s
        Ministry of Truth?

      2. Bazza – “Will this report by political lightweights on behalf of political lightweights conflate & repeat this narrative?” and

We’ll find out tomorrow when this report will be published.

  2. The Germans are really making utter fools of themselves with their craven attempts at expiating their WWII sins.

This woman is a prime example of “progressive” bourgeois idiocy.

    1. Or maybe they’re simply re-promoting a right-wing dystopia again – intentionally and resolutely?

      1. She is from Bavaria. I am not going to be surprised if any or all of her great grand parents were members of the Nazi Party or at the very least Nazi sympathisers.
Would it be possible to do some due diligence into her ancestry? The same with Von Der Leyen?

  3. Stupid fookin crank. What next?

If I went to the local non-jewish bakers and bought a bagel, would the pound sterling i used to pay for it be antisemitic because it’s not a shekel?

Is the roast pork I had yesterday antisemitic because it wasn’t kosher?

Is football club I follow antisemitic because it’s not called beitar or maccabi?

It’s weirdos like schnorbitz** or whatever its name is, cause more problems than enough.

    Example:

I personally have an intense dislike of steven fry. Neither funny nor talented in my opinion. To schnorbitz that makes me an unequivocal antisemitic homophobe .

Same goes for graham norton. For schurrbart, that only reinforces the homophobic accusation AND makes me anti-irish, too.

…Probly best I keep quiet about vanessa feltz…

**Speaking of schnorbitz, perhaps I should strap the soft cow to a chair clockwork orange style and force her to watch old bernie winters clips.

I think a few scones’d be the least of her issues, then.

  4. These people aren’t just incompetent they are positively evil in the extreme.

  5. “Selling a cake to save a life” = gross evil.

Blowing up ten starving kids queuing for water = “the actions of good people.”

Do folks not look in the mirror and ask themselves “Am I insane?”

Apparently the IDF are going to investigate the “error” in aiming ordnance that killed these ten children. If they investigated half the “unfortunate” incidences of murder that they claim they would do the IDF would need more investigators than soldiers. Why does our government not ask them for these promised results of investigations? Or are they too busy taking cash from Zionists to have time to do a bit of actual governing on behalf of the UK?

  6. “Ambient anti-Semitism”?

    Hmmm.

Coming to a lawfare process in this neck of the woods in five, four, three…….

    – Ambient “terrorism”
    – Ambient “hate crime”
    – Ambient “thought crime”
    – Ambient “looking at a Zionist/Police Constable/Politician/Media Hack in a funny way”
    – In possession of an Ambient “funny tinge”
    – Ambient “intent”
    – Ambient “resisting arrest”
    – Ambient “assaulting a police constable”
    – Ambient “protest”
    – Ambient “loitering”
    – Ambient “treason”
    – Being an Ambient “deplorable”
    – Ambient “redundancy notices”
    – Ambient “unemployed”
    – Ambient “hospital beds”
    – Ambient “winter fuel payments”
    – Ambient “pensions”
    – Ambient “job creation schemes”
    – Ambient “political promises”
    – Ambient “elections”

In other news, Franz Kafka has given up, packed his bags, and departed the scene.

      1. Just been handed a puzzler on this theme.

        Any help would be appreciated:

“Is criticism of Rachel Reeves ambient sexism?”

        Thanks in advance.

    1. Moving on, as these things do……..

……I understand the word/term “Latent” is currently hanging around underemployed and not doing much at the moment.

      Just saying.

      1. Dave – But our trump card is the ICJ’s “Plausible Genocide” against Israel showing rational & critical thinking based on evidence demonstrates words can have the power for good.
This soars through the Right’s ‘Ministry of Truth’ (Orwell) like lightening!
        Just needs fully following through.

  7. I read an article about Juliet Stevenson and her husband’s pro Palestinian stance this morning, after I had read this post about this excuse for humanity Von Schnurbein, and this paragraph seemed very relevant.

“This equation of anti-Zionism and antisemitism has been a very difficult thing for me and many others,” Brody says. “It’s an absurdity and an ideological trap. It lays the foundation for a whole new kind of antisemitism.”

A quick look at Von Schnurbein’s ‘wiki’ page shows that she has been a EU bureaucrat all her working life and the EU’s Co ordinator against Anti semitism since 2015.

Von Schnurbein is not Jewish, and from the photograph above would appear to be the very epitome of Hitler’s ‘Aryan’ ideal. Could it be a case of collective guilt handed down through the generations as ‘timfrom’ suggests…or does she have a stake in fomenting imagined anti semitism which will enable her to stay on the EU ‘gravy train’ for as long as possible!

  8. Von Shnurbein has more brown fertiliser than a blocked up sewer. It seems that her cowardly kow-towing to Zionism is part of a collective guilt that Germans seem to have about the Holocaust. As terrible as that was, it is not appropriate for people of her generation to feel that as a result, they have forever forfeited the obligation to criticise Israel, not only for being a white settler-colonial state, but also one that has committed genocide against the people whose land the Israelis have taken. You are, of course, correct to say that her equating Jews with Israel is in itself anti-semitic, as many Jews are not Zionist, and a good number of Zionists are not Jewish.

She deserves no respect whatsoever. Her comments are truly pathetic.

  9. Re Bavaria:
Many of the leading Nazis settled in Bavarian but were not Bavarian.

And the Nazi Party was founded in Bavaria but achieved much higher levels of support in other parts of Germany.

  10. Mann/Mordant AS Report.
Read The Telegraph’s report on the report and though AS incidents have risen from 300 a year in 2008 to 1300 last year (since October the 7th) this is not compared with incidents of racism against other ethnic groups which would have been more informative, and whilst we need to continue to be vigilant concerning ALL forms of racism it could be argued that there are a lot of sweeping statements in this report based on the comments of “A few” and “Some” and “One person said.”
In desperation it even sites Braverman’s “Hate marches” comment on the peaceful Pro-Palestine marches.
I’ve been on about 75 in my city with about 150,000 very diverse other citizens including Left Wing & other Jewish people (The Jewish community is not homogenous & is wonderfully diverse)
and there has been no intimidation of the police, no damage to property; there were about 3 arrests in 21 months in minor incidents but these citizens were released within hours with no charges made against them.
The report says we have been noisily chanting against Jews which is ridiculous.
Yes demos can be noisy, why we have even sung songs but every time our vocal chants have been against the Right Wing Israeli Govt and at times against the UK & other Western Govts but in particular we chant against Zionism.
Oddly the report says Judaism (a set of religious beliefs) should be recognised as an ethnic group and what next Christianity? Hinduism? Hmm
But perhaps what they really are after is making Zionism sacrosanct?
Criticise this and you are AS? Hmm
But perhaps the Right Wing Lab Govt is daft enough (or has its eyes on profits from arms sales and profits from stolen Palestinian land, gas & oil) to agree?
Oh and The Telegraph makes the claim that with a new JC party AS would be likely to rise? Hmm.
But they’ve played that card before and this time we’ll fight back.
And just a thought why no Anti-Islamophobia Tzar?
    Why no Anti-Black Racism Tzar?
Why no Anti-Gypsy & Travellers Racism Tzar? Etc.
    A hierarchy of racism?
The Left has stood many times against the Far Right in the streets (the real racists & AS) and we will continue to do so.
And if we hear any Racist comments from individuals we always try to put uniformed people right.
Recommend Paul Keleman’s The British Left & Zionism: A History of Divorce, and Asa Winstanley’s book and they both expose the AS of Right Wing Labour MPs & Lords such as Hugh Gaitskill, Ernest Bevin & Lord Webb, founder of The Fabians.
