International law expert Ralph Wilde spoke to Al Jazeera about Israel’s genocide in Gaza and the rights of Palestinians to resist – even armed resistance – the illegal occupation. His analysis exploded the excuses of the Israeli regime and its apologists – and their usual demand for acknowledgement of ‘Israel’s right to exist’.
Wilde, a widely recognised and published expert on legal matters relating to territory and colonisation, was clear that:
• Israel has no legal right to exist as an ethnically-dominated ‘Jewish state’ – not just occupying Gaza and the West Bank but at all
• sanctions and other measures to end its occupation are a legal duty for other states
• non-recognition of a state in any sense, resulting in its complete diplomatic isolation, is an correct international response
• Israel, as the illegal occupier and land-stealer, has no right to self-defence against Palestinian resistance because the Palestinians are defending themselves against Israel’s occupation and violence: “there is no defence against self-defence”
• Israel has illegally occupied Gaza continuously long before 2023 – the claim that ‘it all began on 7 October’ is nonsense
• an appeal to security concerns is no excuse for continuing or increasing occupation and violence, let alone for genocide, starvation, extermination, forced transfer and the creation of concentration camps and deportation centres
• the only possible legal basis for Israel’s existence is as a democratic state in which all inhabitants have equal rights and powers – as far from the current fascist, apartheid ethno-state as could be

In her address to the Human Rights Council on 3 July 2025, Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, warned of a genocide unfolding in Gaza and the West Bank. She described the situation as “apocalyptic,” stating that “Israel is responsible for one of the cruelest genocides in modern history.” With over 200,000 Palestinians reported killed or injured and the real toll “far higher,” she accused Israel of dismantling humanitarian aid in Gaza, replacing it with a “so-called ‘Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’ [that] is nothing else than a death trap.” She emphasized that this was not an isolated crisis but part of a decades-long “settler colonial project of erasure” that has intensified in recent months through military force, starvation, and mass displacement.
Albanese condemned the deep complicity of corporate and state actors in what she called an “economy of genocide.” She detailed how arms manufacturers, surveillance firms, banks, tech giants, and universities profit from the occupation, while “colonies spread, financed by banks and insurers, powered by fossil fuels and normalized by tourism platforms.” She stressed that this is not just about “wrongful conduct” but about a global system that sustains apartheid and enables ethnic cleansing. Citing international legal obligations, she called for a “full arms embargo on Israel,” suspension of trade agreements, and immediate disengagement from any business activity contributing to international crimes. “What I exposed is not a list, it is a system,” she said, urging the world to act before it’s too late: “What comes next depends on all of us… It’s not a question of if, it’s just a question of when.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions on Wednesday targeting a top U.N. Human Rights Council official who has been critical of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, alleging the human rights expert has spearheaded a “campaign of political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel.”
Last week, U.N. Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese called for the International Criminal Court “to investigate and prosecute corporate executives and/or corporate entities,” with Albanese alleging war crimes perpetrated by Israel amid its war with Hamas.
