Global church calls for sanctions and arms embargo and BDS on Israel

Unlike US fanatical ‘Israel right or wrong’ far-right or complicit Anglican establishment, representatives of 500m in 120 countries say sanction Israel for its crimes

At a meeting in Johannesburg last week, the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) agreed and published a statement condemning the Israel’s apartheid, demanding an end to Israel’s occupation and the lifting of Israel’s starvation siege of Gaza – and calling on all governments to “impose consequences” on Israel for its “violations of international law”, including sanctions, divestment, and arms embargoes.

The statement repeats the WCC’s commitment to “inter-religious dialogue and cooperation”, a sop to some of its Jewish partner groups who might condemn it, but it continues:

However, the unbearable suffering inflicted on the people of Gaza, and the escalating violence and oppression in the West Bank and in Jerusalem compel the global fellowship of churches to speak with clarity, urgency, and commitment to the principles of justice under international law and ethics.

It goes on to condemn Israel’s ‘grave breaches’ of international law, its contempt for Palestinian human rights and its theft of their land and demands full cooperation of all governments with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its pursuit of Israeli war criminals:

The Government of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has entailed grave breaches of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which may constitute genocide and/or other crimes under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Simultaneously, the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem continue to experience intensified violence, illegal settlement expansion, and systemic human rights violations. These actions defy international legal norms, including the United Nations Charter, the Geneva Conventions, international human rights treaties, and numerous Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.

Full support must be given to the International Criminal Court and UN mechanisms investigating potential war crimes and crimes against humanity. [We] commend the leadership of the South African government in seeking justice and accountability to international law through the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and urge all states to comply with the ICJ’s rulings.

Though the far-right and deeply racist ‘Christian nationalists’ of the US back Israel’s slaughter of its neighbours and its victims in Gaza, many Christians there would agree with the WCC. In the UK, the former Anglican archbishop of Canterbury often sided shamefully with the ultra-Zionist Chief Rabbi, but many Christians, including Anglicans, deplore Israel’s crimes, arrogance and contempt for Palestinian life, rights and freedom, and the Starmer government’s collaboration in Israel’s genocide.

The WCC represents around 500 million Christians in some 120 countries globally.

  1. Talking of christians…I see the zealotlers (sic) have attacked the last entirely Christian town in the west bank, now.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.catholicnewsagency.com/amp/news/265035/priest-warns-christian-town-of-taybe-in-holy-land-no-longer-safe-amid-settler-attacks

Not a peep from those christian evangelists in the US.

Never a religious matter when the (jewish) zealotlers are murdering and destroying…but ‘oy vay, my life orweddey’…its an existential threat to judaism>/b> when a band shouts ‘free palestine’ live on stage.

The sooner them murderous, avaricious zealots are turfed out the better. And don’t allow them here…within a week they’ll be forcibly expelling the legitimate asylum seekers from the hotels and claiming them as their own.

  2. Crazy Fact: Israel and WCC (The World Council of Churches) were both formed in 1948

    FWIW:

2015 – 2022 ALONE, across these seven years, the UN General Assembly adopted 140 resolutions against Israel over its treatment of the Palestinians, its border conflicts and aggression with neighbours and other allegations (e.g. the systemic use of white phosphorous as a weapon against Palestinians.

    – The World Council of Churches (WCC) has been commended for its ongoing efforts to promote justice, reconciliation, and unity across the global Christian community. Recently, the WCC central committee celebrated the legacy of South African churches and their leaders, who have embodied courageous Christian witness in the struggle against colonialism and apartheid. Inspired by the vision of the Freedom Charter and prophetic voices such as Beyers Naudé and Desmond Tutu.

  3. Papier-mashy head screeching has, just mentioned Taybeh.l being set ablaze..but no mention of who was responsible…

OH! As I was typing, he’s just finished with a soundbite (to the effect of) how the world wouldn’t allow israeli towns to be attacked so they shouldn’t be attacking Palestinians …

    Really, weasly? REALLY??

    1. Toffee, – this? https://ca.news.yahoo.com/own-house-order-wes-streeting-082111717.html. Yeah, looks like Streeting, ‘the Palantir sell-out queen’ is really criticising Israel and “settler-violence” re Taybeh. Amazed. Starmer will bollock him.

BTW: Taybeh is called Ephrain in the Christian Gospels and is where Jesus resurrected Lazarus, (before negotiating with the Jewish authorities who wanted him dead, and experiencing his own last week of life on Earth before his crucifixion).

      1. That’s the one! (Except he said it on the beeb too, so this is a doubling-down)

Now, either screeching’s after a spanking off smarmer. (They’re that way inclined, down that Westminster, I’m told)

        OR…

This could be the start of weasly making his bid for the fuhrership**.

You see, when fronted by (the far better than kuenssberg and oerhaps the ONLY beeb presenter to actually challenge politicians) Victoria Derbyshire about keefs -54 approval rating, screeching was visibly less than enthusiastic in his defence.

**In which, case meh! Even if there was to be a challenge to keef and someone from the left threw their hat in the ring, I don’t think there’s any of them I’d want as leader, now, they’ve become that useless thay my indifference to the lot of them has expanded at a corresponding rate. 🫤

      2. Toffee, 10.28
        “bid for the fuhrership….”

Agggghhh! but Yes, Streeting’s already in bed with Palantir, loadsa US private health corps, Eli Lilley, etc.. He is effectively the heir-apparent to ‘Freebie’ Starmer. I’m not sure if that fact depresses me, or fills me with hope.

      3. nice thing is, if he is the new starmer and next (unelected) PM his first name only needs 1 letter to be changed for the whole world to know who he’s really serving: WEF Streeting.

  4. Ere, wee gobshite?!

    -54 approval rating.

    MINUS FIFTY-FOUR approval rating.

Care to tell us when jerumbly cromblyng ever plumbed those depths?

Remember that time during covid when keef complained fhat people hadn’t seen fhe real him, and the folk on here told you that he was a cnut and always will be?

You can’t say you weren’t told.
