Video: Germany says international law cannot be applied to Israel, but can to Iran – and Starmer agrees

Journalist puts German foreign ministry official on the spot and UK PM parrots Israeli talking points

A German foreign ministry official has said that international law banning attacks on nuclear facilities cannot be applied to Israel’s attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities – because Israel claims it attacked them in order to defend itself. Christian Wagner’s discomfort was obvious as a German journalist pointed out that there is no exemption in the relevant international law for countries who think the attack is justified for self-defence – but he continued to parrot his boss’s, and Israel’s, propaganda point:

Iran’s right of self-defence never seems to get a mention.

The same excuse has now been used by the US for its failed attack on Iran’s civil nuclear facilities – and it is just as irrelevant to the law. But to many western governments, international law doesn’t apply to Israel or the US – including the UK government. Keir Starmer attempted to justify the US attacks yesterday because supposedly, “Iran can’t be allowed to have a nuclear weapon” – even though the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and all US intelligence services say it’s not trying to build one.

And to add insult to injury, Starmer tried to claim that it’s now time for the parties to ‘get back around the table’ – in other words, Iran can be attacked but must show ‘restraint’ and not retaliate against its unprovoked attackers:

Starmer claims his view is ‘clear’, but what is actually clear is that Iran was not breaking international law by building a civil nuclear energy programme under the auspices of the IAEA and its inspections – and that Israel, which has nuclear weapons but doesn’t allow anyone to inspect them, and the US are breaking the law by attacking it.

And that Starmer, yet again, is backing the rogue regimes against the law-abiding and claiming the opposite, just as he has done for more than twenty months of Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

  1. We, the people of the world, have massive problems, because the fools we have “representing us.” God knows how many of them became to be elected. In the UK we have a distinctly unpopular leader who won power through (a) lies and (b) by virtue of a system where fewer than 20% of the electorate was sufficient to give his party a vast majority of the seats. It appears there is no method by which we can remove a leader, even a very unpopular one, Or indeed a leader who lies every time he opens his mouth. I can only assume his MPs are so obsessed about their personal gravy train that they refuse to do anything but repeat his words, no matter how idiotic it makes them look. And looking across Europe, America and Israel, things are no better. Indeed, the USA has the misfortune to have a child in the white house that can have control of the world’s largest military and which, from reports, he seemed to send to war on a whim as he was flying in a helicopter having cut short the love of his life … a game of golf. My goodness we Brits are idiots, but the Yanks make us all look to have superhuman qualities in comparison to them!

  2. Given that there is every likelihood that the claims of self-defence are based on faulty AI generated data about Iran being close to producing a nuclear bomb……

……the nakedness of Herr Starmer [apologies for that image, by the way] and the rest of the dumb monkeys running the Collective Worst is becoming a national embarrassment.

If someone does not, either section these tossers under the Mental Health Act or sanction them all a la Eiger we are all going to die of the cringe.

  3. The West at least tried to secure a UN Resolution giving it permission to attack Iraq for ‘having’ WMD, but rather than wait for Hans Blix et al. to complete their weapons inspections rushed to attack.

Israel and the US have not even attempted to gain UN backing for an attack on Iran.

International laws have been shorn of all meaning by this current crop of politicians.

If any country is a NBC equipped rogue state which should be disarmed, it is Israel.

“The first major consequence, in broader terms, is that this strike dealt a final, irreparable blow to what little remained of the post-war international legal and institutional framework. That order was already in tatters — shredded by a year and a half of Western-backed genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza. But this latest attack makes it official: Western powers no longer feel the need to cloak their actions in legality, morality or even the façade of diplomatic legitimacy.

Today, even that pretense is gone. In Gaza, and now with the strikes on Iran, the gloves are fully off. What we’re witnessing is a regression to a kind of global lawlessness — a “might makes right” free-for-all where nothing is off limits: not the mass slaughter of civilians, not the bombing of nuclear sites, not even the complete sidelining of international institutions…….

…….This isn’t only a threat to international security. It’s also a profound threat to what little freedoms we still have left within the West itself. Make no mistake: the Western ruling classes’ open embrace of Mafia-style gangsterism abroad also means that they will have no qualms about brushing aside whatever ethical, legal, constitutional and democratic constrains that still stand in the way of their desperate, hallucinatory bid to preserve the crumbling order.”

  4. NATO’s GS just refused to condemn US illegal actions at a news conference. On Ukraine – could people remember that not only are civilians including children being targeted indiscriminately, that should be condemned by the left? Ukrainian children were kidnapped from their parents by Russia and taken to Russia. These are war crimes.

  5. I watched the debate at the UN Security Council yesterday and what became clear to me is that thanks to the actions of Israel and the US and the speed in which France and the UK justified both the US and Israel parroting the “Iran cannot have nuclear arms” while at the same time urging Iran to show restrain but, no word of criticism towards Israel of the US that are the ones in breach of International Law, is that International Law is a charade to protect the West and to be ignored at the West convenience.
The UK, US, France, Germany and most of the West keep repeating ad naseum that Israel has the right to defend itself. That Israel attacked Iran because of Iran presenting an existential threat (according to Israel and the West) no objective data was presented to prove that Iran is an existential threat to Israel any more in the past week that it was 10 or even 20 years ago.
It make me realise too, that the US plus UK, France, Germany etc don’t appear to keen to attack North Korea. I believe it is because it is widely believe that North Korea has the atomic bomb.
Thus, why on earth Global South Countries will sign to the NPT? When everyone knows that Israel has unregulated and undeclared atomic weapons, isn’t member of the NPT but, still manages to bomb Iran unprovoked but, still in the eyes of the US, France and UK is the victim and Iran the aggressor.
Why would the Global South ignore the lesson that the best way to protect your nation against the neocolonial interference of the US and the West is to develop nuclear arms in the quiet.
Why would any State in the Global South seat at the negotiating table with the US, the UK or the EU? Either you agree with their terms or they bomb you. Hence, diplomacy is death.
All empires fall at some point and the fall of the US is becoming increasingly near, the BRICKS are rising and the US and its allies on the West aren’t going to roost the roost for much longer.

North Korea has nothing worth stealing. Unlike Iraq, it does not have a load of oil or anything.
