UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has said he told his Iranian counterpart that it would be a “‘”catastrophic mistake” for Iran to retaliate for the – unprovoked and almost two weeks before a Trump deadline for Iran to respond – failed US attack on its civilian nuclear facilities.
But, he added, the US decision to commit the – unprovoked and under an effective flag of truce – attack was one that “only [Trump] can make”. Lammy thinks Trump can unilaterally decide to launch an unprovoked attack, but the victim must not fight back:
Lammy also admitted the UK has “forces in the region” – his boss Keir Starmer, who evidently believes international law applies to Iran but not Israel, has refused to say that the UK will not assist the US in attacking Iran – and claimed it would also be a mistake for Iran to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, the nearest to a non-violent retaliation that Iran has at its disposal and one that would quickly inflict massive damage on the US and UK economies, because the Strait carries a quarter of the world’s oil and a third of its natural gas.
In other words, the US might continue to attack Iran and the UK might help Trump do so, but Iran should just sit back and take it and not resist or do anything that might cause inconvenience.
The arrogance of holding such a position, let alone saying it out loud so shamelessly, ought to be shocking. That it isn’t is a telling verdict on the toxic poodle-clown regime of Keir Starmer.
