Starmer and Reynolds boasting of ‘breakthrough’ that cuts tariffs on US imports by two thirds while tripling tariffs on exports to US
Keir Starmer and his business secretary Jonathan Reynolds have trumpeted their trade ‘deal’ with the US that they claim has saved 150,000 jobs in the car and steel manufacturing industries.
As the BBC’s economics editor Faisal Islam has pointed out, the ‘deal’ means that Starmer has slashed the import duty on US-manufactured goods by two thirds, while tariffs on UK goods exported to the US have tripled – a 9:1 win for Trump:
China has scoffed at Trump’s idiocy, while the leaders of far less economically powerful countries like Mexico, Canada and Denmark have faced down Trump’s nonsense, laid out how they will make up elsewhere for any sales the US blocks, and their peoples have essentially boycotted US-made items wherever feasible to punish his posturing – and even tiny Honduras told Trump they’d kick out the US from its bases there – Starmer has allowed himself to be bluffed, blustered and bullied by a clown and he and his cronies are boasting about it.
