Govt warns UK lawyers not to advise ICC in Israeli war crimes cases – or face sanctions

Instead of fighting for UK citizens against Trump’s mafia-like threats, Starmer’s govt acts as his messenger boys

David Lammy’s Foreign Office has warned prominent British lawyers that they face sanctions from the Trump regimein the US for advising the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its war crimes case against Israeli officials in Gaza, including Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant, who are the subject of ICC arrest warrants.

In February, Trump threatened sanctions against anyone supporting the ICC against Israel. Now, instead of fighting the Trump regime over its attack on lawyers working for justice under international law, the Starmer government is acting as Trump’s messenger boy to pass on the mafia-like threat intended to cow and deter advocates for justice and an end to Israel’s genocide and war crimes against innocent Palestinians.

Lawyers in Trump’s firing line include Lord Justice Adrian Fulford, Baroness Helena Kennedy, and barrister Danny Friedman, all of whom advised the ICC whether it had sufficient evidence to charge Netanyahu and Gallant with war crimes and crimes against humanity. Legal experts including Amal Clooney also served on the advisory panel that recommended to the ICC that it should pursue prosecutions against Israeli war criminals. UK lawyers who are working with South Africa on its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel are also potential targets.

The potential sanctions include seizure of assets and travel bans. Lammy’s office contacted the lawyers to warn them they were being targeted, but the UK government has not publicly commented on the matter, let alone fought Trump to end his lawfare and mafia-style coercion.

The ICC has rejected an attempt by Netanyahu and Gallant to have the arrest warrants cancelled. Keir Starmer has rightly been called an ‘instinctive vassal’ and a creature of the security state, without the spine or wherewithal to stand up for the interests of the UK and its people – or against Israel’s genocide of more than 200,000 people so far in Gaza, mostly women and children.

  1. I support the ICC, international law, and any lawyer who does the right thing. I don’t support our moronic PM nor the even more moronic Trump. In May, Starmer, and his handler Morgan McSweeney are going to be told by way of what little democracy we still have, is that the VAST majority of people in the country, detest the lot of them! What an immoral gang we have RULING over us these days, not a tiny drop of morality among the lot of them.

  2. See no evil allow evil that’s our government but sadly constraints on others who would tell the truth

  3. We are now completely colonised by israel. Dont think they will stop at Gaza and the west bank. One day they will come for us in the same manner. Welcome to fascism.
    First they came for…..

    1. I believe it would be best to replace “colonised by Israel” to “colonised by the US” I see Israel as the puppet of the US: a settler colonialist project inserted in the Middle East to keep and eye on the best interest of the US.
In the same way that the US in 2022 encourage Zelinski to engage in war with Russia hinting that Ukraine will access NATO membership and even EU’s membership.
Over 3 years later, is becoming increasingly clear that Crimea will remain under Russia’s control and I somehow don’t see Russia withdrawing from the areas on the Dombass that are under Russia’s control either.
Give it 5 or 6 years until the ICJ comes with a judgement that Israel has committed War Crimes and the US administration could drop its support for Israel as a sack of potatoes. Why do you think the US is now willing to have a deal with Iran? Why do you think Trump is not giving into Netanyahu’s demands to allow him to attack Iran?
Israel fascist government is engaging in a campaign of extermination because they know the only chance right now they have to keep Israel as it is, is to ensure that at least 4 million Palestinians are “persuaded” to leave Gaza and the West Bank and resettle permanently somewhere else. This is why instead of stopping the violence Israel is piling on more violence, rather than seek peace.
The US would very much like to keep its puppet in place so, turning a blind eye to the genocide committed on the Palestinians. However, the US is already hedging its bets by negotiating with Iran, just in case they cannot manage to kill/displace 4 million Palestinians before the ICJ’s judgement.
Hence, Israel is right now the one that has more to lose, Israel is the puppet and the US is the master puppeteer.

  4. You talk of potential sanctions being “..seizure of assets and travel bans”. As far as I understand, the US government has no power to seize assets of British subjects living in the UK (with the possible exception of assets located in the US). The implication is that the Starmer government would act as Trump’s agents, banging on the front doors of lawyers who have advised the ICC in the small hours of the morning, taking away computers, etc (and possibly the lawyers themselves!). Is this what we now passes for (the absence of) civil rights in this allegedly sovereign land??

  5. Democracy is in its death throes, brought in in the States by right-wing billionaires and suckered blue collar workers. It has been ushered into the UK by right-wing politicians pretending to be wanting power for the poor, dispossessed, the ill, and the helpless. In both instances, Israel has played a major part. With support from Starmer not just in words but militarily (NO discussions in Westminster about whether we should be giving actual material support to Israel, and any MP that raises the issues involved has a chance of their concerns being aired). Now we have a carrier group heading, supposedly for Australia, but going via the ME….. one can only surmise they’ll be stopping somewhere off the coast of Gaza for “exercises” yet a site where the group set sail was full of people backing “our boys.” FGS, open your eyes!
