Trump appointee incites war crimes as he endorses US president’s ‘beachfront Gaza’ ethnic cleansing plan
Martin Oliner, appointed in 2020 by US president Donald Trump as a board member of the US Holocaust Memorial Council, has described Palestinians as ‘fundamentally evil’ and ‘not worthy of any mercy’ – in an article calling on Israelis and other Jews to support Trump’s call for the mass removal of Palestinians from Gaza, an unequivocal war crime under international law.
In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, Oliner repeated Israel’s long-discredited claim of mass rapes during the 7 October 2023 raid and said all the people of Gaza are ‘collectively guilty’ of that and other actions:

Oliner, who is also chair of the group ‘Religious Zionists of America’ and president of the ‘Culture for Peace Institute’, claimed that those who care about Palestinians should be ‘gushing with praise’ for Trump’s plan to displace the whole population, adding:
And those like myself who do not believe Gazans are worthy of any mercy should welcome it as well.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said Oliner’s comments made him unfit to hold any position of responsibility:
It is unacceptable for anyone who believes that all children and everyone else in a population are ‘fundamentally evil’ and unworthy of ‘mercy’ to hold a position with any organisation, whether a private or public entity.
It is exactly these types of racist, hate-filled views that lead to crimes against humanity, including the genocide in Gaza.”
Trump has said that he expects Egypt and Jordan to take all the Palestinians of Gaza, leading Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) to condemn Trump’s plan – voiced by his son-in-law Jared Kushner – to turn Gaza into a beachfront resort. The far-right US president said:
I would like [Egypt and Jordan] to take people. You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing and say: ‘You know, it’s over’.
Egypt and Jordan have repeatedly rejected Trump’s proposal, which they know their peoples would never accept. Jordan is said to be prepared for war with Israel if Israel tries to expel the Palestinians into its territory.
UN Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, joined the condemnation of Oled’s racism, quoting JVP to say:
This is despicable, blatantly racist, and genocidal. For the past 15 months, the world has watched the Israeli military’s live-streamed genocide that these words uphold and defend.

It’s even more appalling that these declarations of genocidal intent come from a board member of the US Holocaust Memorial Council. Ensuring that Never Again means Never Again for Anyone requires calling out racism and bigotry whenever we see it, no matter where it comes from.
Oliner’s comments are of a piece with those of the genocidal right in Israel, who openly express their contempt for Palestinian life, even children and babies – as an interview with an occupation military sniper’s mother again made clear this week, telling TV viewers that Israel should ‘simply finish’ all Palestinians, ‘children, babies, it doesn’t matter to us:
