Grenfell United survivors and families condemn Rayner’s ‘unforgivable’ decision to demolish tower

The survivors and bereaved families of the Grenfell Tower blaze have reacted with fury to deputy PM Angela Rayner’s decision to demolish the shell of the tower, which has stood as a monument to those killed by the greed and recklessness of corporations and government since the 2017 fire.

In a statement, the ‘Grenfell United’ group condemned the sham ‘consultation’ and Rayner’s inability even to articulate a reason for the demolition and her refusal to say how many of those affected had been asked for their views. It demanded a real consultation and slammed the ‘disgraceful and unforgivable’ decision to sweep aside the wishes and input of survivors and bereaved families:

On the Government’s announcement to demolish Grenfell Tower, Grenfell United bereaved and survivors family group said:

We’ve said this to every Secretary of State for Housing since the very beginning: consult the bereaved and survivors meaningfully before reaching a decision on the Tower.

Angela Rayner could not give a reason for her decision to demolish the Tower. She refused to confirm how many bereaved and survivors had been spoken to in the recent, short four week consultation. But judging from the room alone – the vast majority of whom were bereaved – no one supported her decision. But she claims it is based on our views.

Today’s meeting showed just how upset bereaved and survivors are about not having their views heard or considered in this decision.

Ignoring the voices of bereaved on the future of our loved one’s gravesite is disgraceful and unforgivable.

Keir Starmer’s ‘Labour’ government not just maintained but escalated all of the many evils of the blue Tory governments it replaced. Its contempt for those affected by the criminal Grenfell blaze is another example.

  1. Oh dear oh dear. I personally think the shell of the tower should be demolished and to my mind another more appropriate memoriam made in its place, but then I am not a survivor or bereaved. Another example of absolutely appalling communications and ‘cackhandedness’ for want of a better expression.

I was always a staunch admirer of Rayner, lived in a neighbouring constituency and knew the area where she grew up very well, but an understatement to say I am extremely disappointed at her willingness to continue serving under Starmer…

    1. The dregs of the professional managerial class (thank you, Audrey White) strike again.

I’m sure she has received NO back-handers from ANY property developers WHATSOEVER!!

  2. In one context it’s called ‘gentrification.’

In another context, it’s called ‘ethnic cleansing.’

‘We’ll transform it into the Riviera of West London’

Let the people move back to their homes.

  3. Once more “We know what’s good for you, and we will do what we think and keep your opinions to yourself! We’re the dictators now.

    1. To summarise: these people, like so many others before them, are surplus to requirements.
