Councillor David Wilson doubles down when challenged – no action from Labour
Right-wing Stockport Labour councillor – and former Stockport mayor – David Wilson has been slammed for a grossly Islamophobic comment about Palestinian children.
Reddish councillor Wilson posted excitedly about the release – in perfect health – of four captured serving female Israeli soldiers earlier this week, but when a respondent expressed hope for the hundreds of children held hostage by Israel without charge in so-called ‘administrative detention’, Wilson responded:
You mean the rock throwers and knife stabbers.
One horrified local told Skwawkbox:
This is openly Islamophobic and a disgraceful thing to be said by an elected official. These are children who are held without charge and to cast them as terrorists with no evidence is openly racist. If similar comments were made about the Israeli hostages then this would rightly be called antisemitism and the strongest action possible would be taken against the individual.
His respondent treated this with disdain, answering; “I mean children. Held without charge.”
When challenged about his comment Wilson doubled down and added some genocide-denial and atrocity propaganda – insisting that before 7 October 2023 there was peace in Gaza under a ceasefire and claiming that ‘Hamas and co’ had ‘killed [and] raped’ ‘young Israeli Jewish females’:
Investigations by the United Nations and others have shown that there were no credible claims of rape and several claims had been definitively disproven – and earlier this month an Israeli prosecutor has admitted that, despite wanting Palestinian detainees dead, she could find no evidence to bring any charges of rape, a stark contrast to the widespread and widely documented torture and sexual torture of detained Palestinian civilians. Israel has also been proven to have issued repeated ‘Hannibal’ kill orders against its own citizens, killing large numbers of them during the kibbutz and music festival raid of 7 October 2023 – a fact openly acknowledged by Israeli media but ignored by UK media and politicians, and by Cllr Wilson, despite or because of Israel’s murder of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, mostly women and children.
Skwawkbox understands that formal complaints have been made to the Labour party about Cllr Wilson’s conduct, but at the time of writing he remains a councillor under the Labour whip. Given Labour’s own entrenched Islamophobia, it’s unlikely that action will be taken against him unless the party faces a major public outcry.
Cllr Wilson was contacted for comment more than two days ago, but did not respond.
