Man known as ‘Grandpa’ to millions for his dignity and peace despite the horrors his family suffered is ‘together’ with the ‘souls of his soul’ again
In November 2023, Khaled Nabhan became known to millions around the world after footage circulated of him hugging the body of his granddaughter Reem, whom he called ‘the soul of our soul’ and whom Israel had murdered in a night-time bombing attack on his family home. Also known as ‘Abu Diaa’, he was interviewed after her death and asked what he wanted to say to the world. His answer was simple:
I wish you would stop the war, for the sake of the children.

His grandson Tariq was also murdered by Israel during its genocide in Gaza, which continues more than a year later. Nabhan became subsequently even more loved for his evident gentleness of soul, giving himself in service to his community and even to stray animals.
Nabhan was killed wearing a t-shirt bearing the words ‘Gaza, the soul of my soul’, which had been made for him by pro-Palestine clothing company ‘Wear the Peace’. It was the first time he had worn it:
Hirbawi, the only maker of the keffiyeh, the scarf that symbolises Palestinian culture and defiance, still operating in Palestine itself, wrote of Nabhan’s death:

Last November, he lost his beloved granddaughter, Reem — the soul of his soul. Now, he has followed her, joining her in a better place, free from the pain and injustices that have marked our days.
Hajj Khaled was more than a grandfather; he was a teacher of love and a beacon of hope. Even in the darkest times, he showed us how to remain compassionate and kind, embodying the strength, unity, and faith that keep us going in Palestine.
His story is one of many, as we remember countless souls lost over the past 14 months — each with lives, families, and stories of resilience. To the doctors, journalists, and everyday heroes who gave everything for others, you are the souls of our soul.

Award-winning Palestinian-American author Susan Abulhawa said in a post about Nabhan’s murder:
Israel is a loathsome political invention that has nurtured the darkest parts of humanity and is unleashing them now in terrifying ways. The harm they do is not just a Palestinian issue. It is an earth issue. A humanity issue.

First they killed his beloveds, now they killed this gentle soul whose life was pure light. Rest in love, Abu Diaa. Rest in power, beloved indigenous son of the land.
She also posted to her social media about her fear that the killing of Nabhan would follow the pattern of Israel’s other atrocities, in which it pushes boundaries to see what it can get away with, and that his murder would only be the first of many of the best known and loved figures of Palestinians’ resilience and refusal to cave under the pressure of the genocidal regime:

Israel’s modus operandi is to push the boundary to see what it can get
away with. For example, frustrated by international activists in
Palestine, they decided to kill one or two to see what they could get
away with. Rachel Corrie, Tom Hurndall, etc were thus killed in cold
blood. However, there were lawsuits and various reverberations that
were costly to them. In other words, there was sufficient outrage and
resistance to make them rethink that strategy.
Their desire to bomb hospitals in Gaza also preceded in this way. Recall
the first hospital they hit? They tested the waters by targeting the
courtyard of the Al-Ahli hospital first. There was initial outrage tamped
by their muddling of the narrative. This paved the way for the much
bigger target: Al Shifa hospital, the largest and most advanced hospital
in Gaza.
They employed the same playbook in collusion with corporate
media solidly in their pockets (BBC, CNN .. all of them). It worked. The
bombing of hospitals was normalized and no one batted an eye as Israel
proceeded to bomb, gut, invade, and destroy one hospital after another,
killing, kidnapping, torturing, and raping healthcare workers and patients
alike.
This is how they made their way into Rafah, the supposed “red
line,” and turned every so-called “safe zone” into an actual death
camp.
This is how they’ve been assassinating journalists.
This is what happened with the assassination of the World Central
Kitchen workers. Remember the first time? the second time they
did it did not elicit any meaningful headlines or coverage at all.
There are a few personalities that have emerged from Gaza who’ve
become much beloved and iconic symbols of love, light,
endurance, dignity, family, community, and faith. Khaled Nabhan
was one of them, and they just killed him.
Make no mistake that this was an intentional assassination to test
our reactions; to see if they can get away with killing the next
internationally known Palestinian with millions of followers. We
all know who they are those amazing people whose light on this
earth shines too bright for the darkness of the Israeli soul.
