Israel extends Syria invasion along Lebanese border

Move threatens Lebanon despite sham ceasefire as Israel seeks to bypass south where it was defeated

Israel has extended its invasion in Syria – which it began as soon as the Assad regime fell to terror groups supported by Israel, the US and the UK – from the Golan Heights and territory adjoining them, up along Lebanon’s border with Syria, shown in the two darkest blue sections on the map below:

Israel continues to violate its sham ‘ceasefire’ with Lebanon, regularly bombing civilian areas – more than a hundred breaches just in the first few days after it supposedly went into force – and has launched huge bombing raids on Syrian military facilities and fuel storage depots, effectively eliminating any imminent threat from the new Syrian regime to its rear if it turns west.

The Lebanon ‘ceasefire’ was supposed to end Israel’s attempted invasion of Lebanon, which had failed with heavy casualties – but the move along the Syria-Lebanon border threatens Lebanon and raises the likelihood that Israel is planning to bypass the fortified south of Lebanon and invaded from the east as part of the far-right regime’s ‘Greater Israel’ imperialist project.

If the UK and other western nations have any interest in peace and in saving countless innocent civilian lives in the region, they need to impose a complete arms and economic embargo on Israel immediately for its violence and contempt for international law. The US clearly will not do so, either under Biden or Trump, but a concerted effort from other western nations might just be enough to derail Israel’s racist genocide land-grab.

Tragically for the people of the region and for the wider world – and most particularly the people of Gaza facing extermination under Israel’s genocide – with the UK and other European nations simply planning to pull up the ladder on desperate Syrian refugees fleeing war, there is little prospect of such a move.
