Israel filmed illegally using white phosphorus on Lebanese village

Video taken near UN outposts shows indiscriminate shelling with deadly ‘napalm equivalent’ – silence from Starmer and Lammy

Video from southern Lebanon shows Israel using white phosphorus shells in area bombing of the village of Kfar Shuba, close to at least three UN peacekeeper bases, 4-13, 4/31, 4-32:

The footage, released by Turkish news agency Anadolu Ajansi, clearly shows the phosphorus causing fires across wide areas and clouds of smoke across even wider areas.

The indiscriminate use of white phosphorus is a war crime. When ignited it is almost impossible to extinguish and burns hot enough to burn through metal and bone. The background of the header image above, slightly blurred for the squeamish, shows an example of the kind of injuries it causes on contact. Burns to only ten percent of the body can easily be fatal. But the smoke from white phosphorus is also extremely dangerous, causing damage to eyes and lungs and often organ failure.

Israel has previously been caught using the weapon in Gaza, also on civilians, and in southern Lebanon beginning a year ago, long before its current invasion, also on civilians. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have long criticised Israel’s criminal use of white phosphorus:

The use of the chemical weapon near UN peacekeeper outposts is also a direct breach of international law.

UK PM Keir Starmer has found time this morning to tweet about the terminal cancer diagnosis of an Olympic cyclist. Foreign Secretary David Lammy has tweeted about ‘bearing down’ on the Kremlin to support the far-right Ukrainian regime. Neither have mentioned Israel’s latest war crime, even though both went through the motions last week of calling Israel’s threats to UN peacekeepers ‘appalling’ – just as they were silent last week after Israel burned hospital patients to death in Gaza and on Israel’s terrorist attack on Lebanon before it invaded.

  1. I’m sorry, was someone expecting the bought and paid for PM or FS to show some moral judgement?

  2. People will quickly realise that Starmer’s non-position on this means he is not on “our side”. He’s an obedient servant of…mmmmm…. something else.

FWIW Israel promised in 2009 to stop using white phosphorous, yet here it is using it again both in Gaza and Lebanon.

We have to conclude that Starmer’s silence here is his full-endorsement of Netanyahu’s mass extermination plan in Gaza and Lebanon.

  3. The murder of UK citizens by the IDF a while ago caused them no obvious concern.

    1. That had more to do with the way it was reported. The MSM, state-broadcaster and Opposition (as was) were telling us that poor little Israel was fighting for its life and accidents happen, esp when devious local terrorism-supporters were playing dirty tricks (as they do).

Point is: even tho anger and concern were widespread, they didn’t report it.

  4. It seems crazy (although what, these days, constitutes “crazy”?), but I reckon the person to bring some relative sanity to this situation is a figure with the experience and charisma that Starmer & Lammy so woefully and evidently lack; a figure who is still loitering on tne fringes as a rent-a-quote and who has never reconciled himself to retirement.

Starmer could easily be gone by Christmas, to be replaced by the only acceptable choice for leader among the right wing. Come on down, my tip for next Labour leader…..Tony Fucking Blair!

  5. Tzipi Navon, Sara Netanyahu’s close advisor and office manager called for residents from Gaza who participated in the [7 October] massacre to be tortured live on broadcast television:

“First removing the nails from the hands and feet … cut off [their] genitals and let [them] see [their testicles] fried in canola oil and [force them] to eat them … Keep the tongue to the end, so that it pleases us with its screams, the ears so that [they] can hear [their] own screams and the eyes so that [they] can see us smile.”

There is more, including anal electric shock torture and bestiality. Our government supports this regime.

    1. Susan Abulhawa’s report is unbearably painful. Rivkeh Brown’s context piece actually deepens the pain.

Viner is de-Guadianing theGuardian in a similar way that Starmer is Labour and Graham is Unite.

  6. Is a great piece in the latest The New Left Review (Jul/Aug 24) by Nathan Sperber on ‘The Crisis in France’ and he draws upon Gramsci in his analysis.
And I just wondered if this could also be applied to Palestine?
Is the old order dying, Western Neo-Liberal capitalism?
But the new, a Free Independent Palestine, cannot yet be born?
And is the Zionist Occupation Force the morbid symptom?
But Sperber also gives a warning, such an outcome as we may desire, a Free Multi Ethnic Democratic State of Palestine, would have to be careful not to be co-opted by Elite supporting bureaucracies?
    Food for thought by Sperber.
    Ceasefire Now!
    Yours in Peace.

  7. “Far right” Ukrainian “regime” ????? You mean the democratically elected government?
If you want to be trusted avoid your jaundice.

    1. Given that:

      – the term of office of President ended in May this year;

      – the unconstitutional coup of 2014, financed and supported by certain Oligarch interests in the collective West;

      – and the fact that the ultra right neo Nazi nature of the Ukrainian regime was once recognised across the West

The facts do not support such a jaundiced interpretation.

  8. Off topic:

From Labour Heartlands an article on the terrible Aberfan disaster of 1966. It’s a very long piece with many images. Here are just a few paragraphs:

    9:13 a.m., the mountain moved.

In less time than it takes to read this sentence, 300,000 cubic yards of liquefied coal waste broke free. The black tsunami gathered speed as it raced downhill, consuming everything in its path. It struck Pantglas Junior School with such force that the building’s walls exploded inward. Inside, children who moments before had been opening books and sharpening pencils found themselves buried alive beneath a horrific mixture of coal, shale, and mud.

What followed was a desperate race against time. Hundreds of miners – men who had spent their lives digging coal from beneath the Welsh earth – now clawed frantically at the slurry with bare hands, trying to reach the buried children. Some dug until their fingers bled. Others dug even as they knew they were searching for their own children.

By day’s end, 144 people lay dead – 116 children and 28 adults. An entire generation of Aberfan’s children was gone, and with them, the village’s future. But this was no natural disaster. This was a human-made catastrophe, born of negligence and killed by indifference. The coal board had been warned. The residents had complained. Engineers had raised concerns. Yet the tips had continued to grow, fed by an industry that valued profit over lives.

The true tragedy of Aberfan lies not just in the lives lost that rainy October morning, but in the knowledge that every death was preventable. Every child who walked to school that day might have lived, had those in power simply listened, simply cared, simply acted.

Some parallels about caring and acting at the end there with today’s situation, perhaps?

  9. God rest them.

    Even further off-topic

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cly7kyv2wnvo

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will appoint the former Conservative Justice Secretary David Gauke to lead a review of prison sentencing, the BBC has confirmed.

The Labour Party said in its general election manifesto it would establish a review of sentencing “to ensure it is brought up to date”.

The BBC reported earlier this month that Gauke was the frontrunner to lead the review.

His appointment is expected to be announced on Tuesday by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

Gauke was justice secretary under Theresa May from January 2018 to July 2019.

He then broke with the Conservative Party over Brexit, and stood unsuccessfully as an independent candidate at the 2019 general election. In July he rejoined the Conservative Party.

Gauke has previously suggested that jail terms of less than six months should be scrapped.

The fucking slimeball was DPP FFS. Now he’s brought in ANOTHER TORY to review the guidelines keef fucked up in the first friggin place.

Sentences of six months to be scrapped?

That’ll just about every nonce case that IS convicted being allowed to roam the streets, then.

What’s not to like, eh, wee gobshite?

  10. Greek dockworkers block shipment of 21 tonnes of ammunition to Israel

Sky News has a film report of the protest herehttps://news.sky.com/video/greek-protesters-and-dock-workers-have-blocked-an-israeli-ammunition-shipment-at-piraeus-13235900 and a fuller report of it, by Robert Stevens, is readable here https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2024/10/20/wbft-o20.html

“Every little helps”. In UK Starmer would have them locked-up as terrorist.

  11. Israel only survives with arms and vast amounts of money from the United States. Most US Politicians support Israel, however most Politicians also supported the Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and Ukraine wars until they were utterly defeated and had to leave with troops hanging on to the skids of helicopters. Tick, tock.

  12. https://jonathancook.substack.com/p/israels-burning-alive-of-shaaban

“What Israel has made clear, supported by western capitals, is that there is no safe place, not even for those recovering in a hospital bed from Israel’s earlier atrocities. There are no “non-combatants”, no civilians. There are no rules. Everyone is a target.”

Everyone. Palestinians; Arabs; Anyone who criticises or is opposed to The Official Narratives. Anyone and everyone who stands up to these parasitic sociopaths, regardless of who and where they are.

    To paraphrase:

“Who will rid us of these Genocidal ultra Zionists and their Fascist Western Puppet Masters? “
