Israel’s targeting and mass murder of journalists continues as Al Jazeera cameraman fights for life
Palestinian Al Jazeera journalist Fadi Alwhidi, who was shot in the neck last week by Israeli troops as he filmed in Gaza, has fallen into a coma after the occupation regime refused permission to evacuate him for proper treatment. Israel has bombed most of Gaza’s hospitals out of operation and those that continue are running as skeletons, often without medicines, painkillers and power.
Alwhidi was filmed, surrounded by his family, by his colleague Karam Hassan:
Israel has killed more than 180 journalists in Gaza since October last year – more than were killed in the whole of the Second World War and more than have been killed in all 21st-century wars and conflicts put together. As Israel ramps up its genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, its targeting of journalists is also intensifying. A video published by Writers against the War on Gaza recalls some of the horrifying moments of the mass murder to silence journalists and the threats Israel has made before killing, or trying to kill, them. A text released to accompany the video calls on western journalists, who have largely been silent about Israel’s targeting of journalists, to act against the slaughter:
Last November, Al Jazeera journalist Salman al-Bashir broke down on live TV as he reporting the death of colleague Mohammad al-Hattab and his family, victims of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza. “These vests do not protect us,” al-Bashir lamented, removing his gear.
Israeli forces have continued targeting media workers to silence their reporting on Gaza. Despite clear evidence, Western media’s silence persists. Threatened with death if they continue, 177 Palestinian journalists have been killed since last October. The siege in the North worsens the plight of journalists like Fadi al-Wahidi and Ali al-Attar.
