Netanyahu claimed Israel is for peace as his forces were mass-bombing civilians to kill Hezbollah leader and provoke regional war
Israel has killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in its attack on a Beirut suburb, dropping a series of around a dozen heavy bombs on a densely-populated area. Israel has designated homes, schools and hospitals in Lebanon as ‘legitimate’ targets, with some ministers saying Lebanon will be ‘annihilated’ and ‘no longer exist’. The group has confirmed the death of its leader.
The attack began as Benjamin Netanyahu finished giving a speech to the UN – large numbers of delegates walked out before he began rather than listen to someone they consider a war criminal – in which he dismissed the UN as a ‘swamp’ of antisemitism and claimed Israel is ‘for peace’.
Earlier this month, Israel launched two waves of indiscriminate terrorist attacks in Lebanon, killing and maiming thousands of bystanders, including children, by exploding booby-trapped pagers and radios, which it followed with mass bombings that killed and injured many hundreds more civilians, including many women and children. Many of Israel’s supporters cheered the terror attacks and mocked the victims – and will no doubt do the same in this case, but if any country or group killed masses of Israeli civilians in order to remove Netanyahu, they would no doubt have a different response.
The US and UK have called for Lebanon and its neighbours not to retaliate to Israel’s attacks in order to avoid escalation into regional, but have not imposed any restraint on Israel’s campaign to provoke one, which Netanyahu wants in order to bring the US into direct war and to put off the corruption trial that is waiting for him as soon as he is out of office – in fact, the US has said it will defend Israel from attack no matter what the cause. The assassination of Nasrallah now makes a mass response from Hezbollah and its allies in Iran, Iraq and Yemen.
