Newham independent Naqvi trounces Labour in by-election

Labour loses yet another council seat in London borough party fears is becoming ‘another Tower Hamlets’ – and party didn’t even bother to turn up at polling stations

Newham Independents candidate Sophia Naqvi has trounced Labour to win the Plaistow North by-election, giving the Independents their third councillor in the East End borough.

Naqvi won 1286 votes to Labour’s 750 after a clean and well-supported campaign by the independents that saw Labour barely able to muster canvassers for party-imposed candidate Aktharul Alam. Locals have told Skwawkbox that there were no party representatives in sight in at least two polling stations, suggesting Labour knew what was coming from the reactions it received on the doorstep.

Newham has seen a string of resignations of senior party officers over Keir Starmer’s assault on democracy – and this week saw Cllr Zuber Gulamussen and several party officers resign over Starmer’s support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza. With Independent Group leader Mehmood Mirza already having hammered another imposed Labour candidate in May, Labour figures fear that Newham will become ‘another Tower Hamlets’ – the London borough that the party lost catastrophically to the Aspire group run by Lutfur Rahman, the former – and again current – mayor ousted after a racist smear campaign by the Labour right.

Based on tonight’s result, those fears appear to be coming true. Congratulations Sophia Naqvi and the Newham Independents.

  1. Thanks so much for this Steve!!! Great to get the news from Skwawkbox that the candidate I voted for this evening has won – and won handsomely!!!

  2. More of this, please.

I’m every bit as much KSO (Keep smarmer out) as those centrist beauts you see on twotter who put GTTO.

  3. Congratulations Sophia.

It was only five months ago that independent left-winger candidate Mehmood Mirza ‘trounced’ Labour’s imposed candidate in the Newham Boleyn ward and 22 months since two Newham CLP Chairs resigned from their posts stating the “Labour can no longer be trusted” and already a ‘new (de-facto) party’, The Newham Independents, exists.

No wonder initiatives like “Transform” are taking-hold all over the country. Unprecedented turbulence in the Labour party is Starmer’s legacy. Mirza and Sophia Naqvi are it’s result.

There is Hope. Congratulations Sophia Naqvi and the people of Plaistow North.

  4. Congratulations Sophia Naqvi.
This is where Starmer’s support for the murderous State of Israel leads to.
Decent people are finding an alternative to Starmer’s Labour Party.
Please … More of the same.

    1. Good to see the fascists getting a kicking. Let’s hope that life long loyalties don’t reassert themselves come the GE. This needs to be reflected nationally. I am not trying to diminish her achievements but I think that most skwawkies will get my point. The Starmerites will throw the kitchen sink at every by election from now on. Just a calm warning.

  5. Quite a contrast from result in the other by-election that also took place in the neighbouring Newham ward of Wall End yesterday .

    Labour – Stephanie Garfield – 1,659 – 61.1% (+12.4%)
    Conservative – Durai Kannan – 724 – 27.2% (+12.3%)
    LibDems – Claire Pattie – 138 – 5.1%
    Greens – Tassaduq Cheema – 124 – 4.6%
    ReformUK – David Sandground – 58 – 2.1%

    1. Ooops – My mistake – I misread an article, the above election took place Thursday 13 July 2023

      1. Thanks, but I wasn’t aware that anyone was disputing yesterdays result.

      2. Labour still hold more than 90% of the seats on Newham Council.

      3. Yes SteveH, but you must fear for it.
Labour under Starmer will never achieve those lofty heights again – anywhere in London. Gaza, Ukraine and the orchestated deception called a ‘pandemic’ – Starmer showed which ‘side’ he was on for each.

  6. Oh dear. Dear oh dear. Deary, deary me.

Your attempt to take the shine off Sophia Naqvi’s resounding triumph over the smarmerite candidate – AND without losing the deposit into the bargain – has evidently fallen rather flat by your failure to even do the due diligence on your own posting.

We’ve been blessed by your absence, but on this latest evidence it’s best you refrain from commenting altogether , rather than put in the occasional appearance and continue to metaphorically insert foot into mouth.

Seriously, you’re regarded in a much more amenable capacity when you’re NOT posting. You really should keep it that way. 👍😉

    1. Toffee….The weather around here has been relatively warm and pleasant for quite a while. Then these last few hours has seen a cold front emerge again……

      1. baz2001 – It is a pleasant c30℃ for most of the year here

      2. Oh, DO fuck off. Everyone knows what I’m on about – including you

For the avoidance of doubt – the deposit you delight in when a non-smarmerist fails to get enough support.

Expect more of the same, knobhead. And so what if it’s 30c where you are?!

        …It’s a lot hotter where you’re going.

    2. Toffee
      On another matter

Cherry on cake will be if he chooses to go to the Euro’s with Scotland

      1. He ain’t our lad Dougal. He believed his own hype, got himself a primadonna attitude and wanted out and the barcodes paid £40m for him, which I guess has been good business for them.

But like all our other former homegrown players, he’ll realize the grass isn’t always greener away from Goodison.

Had it been Gordon fronting the fans at posh southport bournemouth instead of tripper, he’d have wanted out from yous.

That said, he’d improve the jocks no end if he decides to opt for them. But that’s the easy option innit?
