Cross-party agreement forces climbdown – watch Liverpool Community Independents leader Alan Gibbons’s speeches
Liverpool City Council voted on Wednesday evening – despite a ban imposed by the leadership on a speech by local Jewish woman Helen Marks – to call for a full and immediate ceasefire in Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Council insiders have told us that the council’s Labour leadership folded in the face of a rebellion among many of the city’s Labour councillors – and the determination of the council’s smaller parties.
Liverpool Community Independents group leader Alan Gibbons – a former Labour councillor who was one of many to renounce the party last year over planned cuts to services for the city’s most vulnerable people – spoke to the assembled councillors in favour of a ceasefire call:

This modicum of sanity in a small part of the Labour party had to be wrung from it by public outrage and the exposure of its attempts to quell freedom of speech.
Liverpool Community Independents group has announced that it will stand a candidate against Garston Labour MP Maria Eagle because of her support for Keir Starmer’s refusal to call for a ceasefire.

Now THAT’S standing on your principles.
Alan Gibbons has/had seen how our own are treated, and forgone his membership directly because of it (amongst the many other injustices committed by that shower o’ shite), whereas many others claiming to have socialist principles have failed to do so.
Many, many more of those others have now gauged the depth of anger at events in Gaza, and, in a cynical attempt to redeem themselves, are cynically offering support for a ceasefire, when in reality they’re climbing on the bandwagon to give the appearance they actually give a shite. The longer the conflict goes on, the less convinced I am by those being converted to calling for a ceasefire
How you treat and support your own is the yardstick.
Too many socialist politicians have stayed silent on too many domestic & internal party issues for them to be taken seriously (by me at least) for them to now suddenly have any concern for others a few thousand miles away.
Some I will give the benefit of the doubt to. The likes of mouthpiece philips can GTF. Not that they could ever be deemed socialist.
Meanwhile in rural/seaside North Yorkshire all the members of the Labour Party are in town centre and outside of town halls, carrying banners and handing out leaflets expressing their revulsion to Zionist and Fascist actions taking place. Oops sorry. They are conspicuous by their inactions. Almost got it right. I did ask a member of our tenants association and hard Starmerite a few softball questions. What struck me and others present was the look on her face while I was talking. It was worse than hate. Aren’t you a bit old to be an Extremist?”. Well actually one is never too old to be a Socialist. We are inclusive not extremist. That is the point we have reached. Ask reasonable, polite questions and you are a terrorist. Enjoy being in your party members? Is she a good example of where things stand today? It’s not the honest, traditional or young idealists that cause me to shudder but those with their hands on the tillers of the bureaucracy. They are evil and the complete opposite to even the gang of 4. How did it come to this?

Israel knows it risks losing global support over its slaughter of children. So it’s turning to social media disinformation that’s sloppy but often effective.
On November 11, the official Arabic account run by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted a video of a nurse, apparently agitated, talking about Hamas overrunning the al-Shifa Hospital, and taking all the fuel and morphine. She claimed that because Hamas had stolen morphine, she couldn’t use it on a five-year-old with a fracture.
The video, which was retweeted thousands of times, was a clear fake. No staff in the vicinity appear to recognise the individual featured, casting doubt on her identity and role. Robert Mackey, a journalist with the research agency Forensic Architecture, spoke to three Doctors Without Borders staff members working at the al-Shifa Hospital, none of whom recognised her.
The video was almost comic in its absurdity. The nurse spoke with a non-Palestinian accent, and her dialogue seemed to perfectly echo Israeli military talking points about Hamas stealing all the fuel from hospitals.

Israel denies the Nakba while perpetuating it
Israel wants the Palestinians to remember the Nakba but not to commemorate it.
On the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, it seems apt to think about how the events of 1948 have shaped not only the history of the Palestinian people, but also their present colonial reality.
For Palestinians, the Nakba is a “ghostly matter” – to use a phrase first introduced by sociology professor Avery Gordon. It has become a psychic force that ceaselessly haunts the present.
Haunting, as Gordon explains, is one of the ways in which oppressive forms of power continue to make themselves known in everyday life.
As many Palestinians insist, it is also an ongoing process characterised by lasting forms of state-sanctioned violence. It is something that Zionist forces continue to practise. Indeed, every time a Palestinian is executed by Israeli soldiers or a home that took years to build is demolished, this specific act of violence not only shocks, but also summons the memory of the Nakba.
The permanence of the Nakba was made quite apparent when in February, Jewish vigilantes carried out a pogrom in the Palestinian town of Huwara, and instead of condemning the crime, Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich complained that state forces rather than private citizens should be erasing Palestinian villages.
But the Israeli state’s strategy to create new memories of violence among Palestinians and thus ensure that the Nakba remains a constant presence seems to contradict its official policy of denying it ever occurred……..
